Got
Renter’s Insurance?
 Renter’s
insurance is fairly inexpensive (around
$150 /year), and it covers belongings in case of theft or damage
due to fire, flooding, etc. However, according to a UVM off-campus
student survey conducted last spring 58% of students surveyed did not
have
renter's insurance and 20% were unsure whether they were covered.
Yikes! This means that all of those students would be left
holding the bag in the event of a major loss like the one above*. And
please note that your
landlord’s homeowner’s insurance does NOT
cover YOUR personal belongings.
Here are some steps to consider:

If your parents/guardians own their home, ask
if you are covered under their homeowner’s insurance. Find out which of
your belongings would and would not be covered in the event of a loss.

Check out the yellow pages for insurance
providers or if you have a car, ask your car insurance company if they
also provide renter’s insurance. See if they offer discounted rates for
bundling the packages.

Check out National Student Services at
www.nssi.com to see what they offer for coverage.
Also, take a couple minutes to register your bike,
laptop/computer, and other valuables with UVM
Police Services so that you have some documentation of what you own
in case of theft or other loss. Taking time stamped pictures or videos
of your belongings is also helpful. If you have already been a victim

Jarrod Szydlowski, a student at the University of Vermont, organized a
community trash clean-up in Burlington in the Buell/Bradley Street
area. Many volunteers from the school
and the community, including groups from fraternities and sororities,
joined forces to clean the streets on the 2nd of October, 2011. This is
just one of the many community/student events to come.

Home is where the art
is! Join local kids in a photography
project that starts with taking pictures on the street where you live
and ends
with an art piece that will be displayed on and off campus. Kids and off-campus students share
perspectives about what they like most about the street they share and
what
they would most like to change.
Join the Art of Photography L/L suite and local
neighborhoods kids as we
explore our street stories and share perspectives through photography!
We are looking for 5 off-campus students that
enjoy working with kids and
are able to attend both sessions below:
1.
Wed.
10/19 from 5:30-6:30pm
- Dinner provided!
2.
Sat.
11/5 from 12-2pm
- Lunch provided!
Participants will be given free disposable cameras
to take pictures on the
street where they live.

We have heard from students and neighbors that
fireworks have been an
on-going challenge throughout the summer and into the fall
semester.
Fireworks can be frightening and disruptive to
unsuspecting neighbors, children, and pets. They are also very
dangerous if not carefully controlled and can be a HUGE fire hazard in
Burlington where we have some of the oldest wooden housing in the
country. Discharging fireworks within
the city limits is also illegal and can be fined up to $500.
Please help us reduce this neighborhood
disruption! If you see fireworks being set off you can call the
Burlington Police
Department at 658-2700.

Voice Needed!
WARD 6 NPA Meeting October
6th at 7PM
The next Ward 6 Neighborhood Planning Assembly meeting (a monthly
meeting of community members including college students) will include
the third annual panel  discussion on community
relations with the
colleges. This is the opportunity for students to have themselves heard
as community members, college administrators and city officials discuss
how students and non students can live harmoniously in Burlington.
Students and their perspectives are often left out of this discussion
but the NPA welcomes them. In fact, students who live on and off campus
who attend are in fact members of the NPA. This includes Redstone
campus residents. General information about Burlington's NPAs can be

The meeting is at the Greek Orthodox Church, 600 South Willard
Street, though access to the parking lot is from Ledge Road.
Directions:
Head south on St. Paul, South Union or South Willard (they all merge
into Route 7) to the traffic circle. You will see Majestic Car
Rental at the corner of Ledge Road and South Willard. Go around the
circle and head east (up hill) on Ledge Road. The second driveway on
the left goes to the Church's parking lot.

Halloween
Bike Ride:
Shared Streets Not Scared Streets!
 Join hundreds of riders in a
rolling Halloween costume party! The police escorted parade begins at
2pm in City Hall Park and winds through downtown and the Old North End,
and ends with a Halloween party at Magianero's Cafe, 47 Maple Street.
(approx. 3-5pm). This is a family friendly, all ages event open to
bikers, walkers, in-liners, and skateboarders.
