November 2012
Greetings from
Gail:
A fun part of our office
life is working with
residents on projects that
improve their streets. We
do this through our
Student-Neighbor Liaison
Program's Neighborhood
Grants. This past Saturday,
we gathered with Phil and
Brian (who founded ISGOOD -
Isham Street Gardening and
Other Optimistic Doings),
their neighbors, and members
of the Pi Kappa Alpha
fraternity to clean up and
beautify the street. This
is all part of ...

Got
Renter's
Insurance?

Renter’s insurance is
fairly inexpensive (around
$150/year), and it covers
belongings in case of
theft or damage due to
fire, flooding, etc.
However, according to a
UVM off-campus student
survey conducted last
spring, 58% of students
surveyed did not have
renter's insurance and 20%
were unsure whether they
were covered. Yikes! This
means that all of those
students would be left
holding the bag in the
event of a major loss like
the one above*. And please
note that your landlord’s
homeowner’s insurance does
NOT cover YOUR personal
belongings.
Here are some steps to
consider:
- If your
parents/guardians own
their home, ask if you
are covered under their
homeowner’s insurance.
Find out which of your
belongings would and
would not be covered in
the event of a loss.
- Check out the yellow
pages for insurance
providers or if you have
a car, ask your car
insurance company if
they also provide
renter’s insurance. See
if they offer discounted
rates for bundling the
packages.
Also, take a
couple minutes to
register your bike,
laptop/computer, and
other valuables with UVM
Police Services so
that you have some
documentation of what
you own in case of theft
or other loss. Taking
time stamped pictures or
videos of your
belongings is also
helpful. If you have
already been a victim of
property crime contact
the Parallel
Justice Program to
see how they can help.

... IS GOOD's vision to
be on a gardening map
of the city. We got
out the shovels and
planted yellow, pink,
and white mums and 100
daffodils and tulips
that will come up in
the spring in the
green belts. We also
put some color in the
blueberry and herb
garden that Brian and
his neighbor Sonia
created on a front
lawn that a landlord
donated to ISGOOD. For
the 3 years we have
partnered with ISGOOD
we have seen traffic
calming, the planting
of 2 trees, and 6
green belt gardens
created from the
energy, persistence,
and vision of
neighbors. They see
the street as one of
potential for
connecting community
through gardening.
Next steps: setting up
community composting,
providing households
with large recycling
totes with covers so
recyclables don't turn
into garbage flying
around the street, and
holding classes on
growing and cooking
herbs. If you are
interested in doing a
project on your
street, we can assist
with staffing and
funding. Just send me
an e-mail at oscr@uvm.edu. I would love to work
with you and your
neighbors to make
something wonderful
happen!
