“off” - TV's, computers, phone chargers, etc. Save energy and
money by unplugging these devices while they are not in use (putting
them on shared power strips/surge protectors makes this a lot easier to
do!).

Stay Warm ~ Ride the
Bus for Free
UVM students, faculty, and staff ride the CCTA
city buses for free courtesy of UVM! Just swipe your UVM ID and enjoy a
comfortable heated trip up the hill to campus.
The City
Loop bus is a popular choice for students and picks up passengers
at the corner of No. Union/North St., No. Union/No. Winooski
Ave., and North Willard/Arcihbald Street.
The City Loop drops off at Waterman as well as near Redstone
Campus.
If you are coming from Winooski try picking up the Essex
Junction Bus at the Champlain Mill. There is also the College
Street Shuttle which is a great way to get from campus to downtown
or
vice versa. You can even take your bike on all city buses if you
need a more direct route home!

I
lived in Burlington
for almost five years before I really started
to pay attention to how much happens in this vibrant town of ours. And
once I started to pay attention, I slowly began to take advantage of
all that goes on here and actually get involved in the community. I
then began to feel more integrated and a part of something bigger than
my own little world. And, let me tell you, that is a good feeling.
Getting involved in the broader community is educational, entertaining,
engaging and rewarding. It provides perspectives that you would
otherwise not see or hear and brings you closer to where your neighbors
are in all kinds of ways. It also keeps life zesty.
 College students are an
important part of our community. You are part of
what helps to keep Burlington vibrant
and interesting. It is my hope that you never find yourselves bored and
disengaged and, to help prevent this from happening to you, let me
direct you to an enewsletter that the City of Burlington issues every
Thursday called "The
Neighborhood BUZZ.” It is packed with all kinds of things happening
in Burlington. To receive it every Thursday in your inbox, just email
me and let me know and I will add you to the mailing list.
I
would also encourage you to drop in on any number of community meetings
that happen every week, somewhere in Burlington: City
Council, Planning
Commission, Neighborhood
Planning Assemblies, etc. Seeing how the community governs itself
and how regular citizens are part of this process is pretty cool. It
will also provide you with insight that could help direct you towards
the best place for YOU to live as you plan your future. Burlington
"in-action" is quite exciting and it sets the bar pretty high as far as
places to live, work and play.

Get Towed
Burlington maintains a warning system of
yellow lights mounted on utility poles throughout the  city. These
lights are activated when a snow parking ban is declared or when street
maintenance, such as sweeping, will occur. When the lights are on,
parking is prohibited on any street in the residential areas from
10:00PM to 7:00AM and in the downtown/Church Street Marketplace areas
from 12:00 midnight to 6:00AM. Vehicles
towed or found in violation of the snow
ban or street maintenance ban will be ticketed ($95.00 fine).
During a Parking Ban residents are permitted
to park in any city-owned
parking garage from 10PM to 7AM with no charge. Please do not
park on
the top level of any garage in order that it, too, can be plowed. To

Protect Your Property
While Out of Town
Burglaries and larcenies are usually crimes of
opportunity. Whether you are going home during an extended
university
break (the upcoming Thanksgiving & Winter Breaks), or are just
leaving town for a couple of days, the following tips are ways to
increase the security of your residence:

plastic sheets on widows can improve insulation noticeably.
