Moving Out? Or Moving In?
Come to the Spring Move
Out Project Community Recycling Event!
Join us for the Spring
Move Out Project (SMOP) on Friday
May
28th from
11am-3pm on Loomis Street (between School and No. Willard Streets).
If you are moving out of your off-campus apartment SMOP is
an opportunity
for you to bring unwanted household
items that are in good condition (books, clothes, furniture, appliance,
bikes, etc) to a central location where they can be donated to other
community members, off-campus students, and local
non-profits for reuse. NOTE: We do not accept trash at the SMOP
event. SMOP is also a great opportunity for
people moving in to a new place to take away household items free of
charge!

to Moving in Burlington brochure which has more tips on what to do
with all the stuff you don't want when you are on the move.

Tips for Getting Your Security Deposit Back
 If you are
moving out of your off-campus apartment here are
some tips for making the
transition go as smoothly as possible:

When you move out, make sure to clean the
place thoroughly. Clean the oven, refrigerator, bathroom, windows,
floors, etc. If you
do not do this, the landlord may deduct money from your security
deposit. The key is to make sure the apartment/house is in as good, if
not better, condition as when you first moved in.

Remove all personal property and dispose of
garbage in bins provided. It is illegal to leave items on the
greenbelt, in a front yard, in a city park, in the street, or on the
sidewalk. Anyone leaving trash in an improper location can be fined up
to $500.

Contact ALL the utility companies to
terminate
your services.

Remove your name(s) from the mailbox,
and have your
mail held at the post office until they receive your new
address. The post office will forward all your mail when they
receive
your address on a change
of address form.

Make arrangements to have your
landlord
examine the apartment/house to get approval before you move out.
You
may save money from your security deposit if minor problems are found
you can repair yourself. If you filled out a Move-In
Check List with your landlord
pull out that document and fill out the Move-Out
Check List portion.
This will help ensure that you document the condition of your unit as
it was on the last day of your lease term.

Return your keys to the landlord.

Give the landlord your forwarding
address so that your security deposit (and a list of itemized
deductions from the deposit if there are any) can be returned to you
within 14 days from the time you have vacated the apartment.

not see your security deposit within 14 days you can call VT Tenant's
Inc. (802) 864-0099 for more information on your rights. They also have

Deposit Return
form letters available.

Subletter or Sublet?
Connect With Each Other
For FREE!!
Go to http://offcampushousing.uvm.edu,
click on the
"register here" link, and create a username and password (not your UVM
Net ID/password). Once you have an account you will then be able to
post free sublet ads and
have access the site's rental and for sale databases, message boards,
and off-campus living resources. If you create a new Student
Account by 4/30 and get entered into a drawing for a free Apple iPad!!
NOTE: Before you sublet always get
permission from your
landlord. If you don't you may be in violation of your lease
agreement. You can also fill out a written Sublease
Agreement with your subletter and take a security
deposit which can be held in case of damage to the apartment (note this
must be returned within 14 days of move out with a itemized list of any
deductions held due to damages). When
subletting you are
still responsible to your landlord for the original lease and you also
can be held responsible for any problems created by the new tenant.
Make sure to inform your subletter about lease obligations and city
ordinances
regarding noise, alcohol, trash, parking, etc. A problematic
subletter can damage neighbor relationships and make your efforts to be
a good neighbor more difficult.
Have

Spring is a great
time to reintroduce yourself to your neighbors and to get
more involved in your community (anyone up for a neighborhood clean
up? Check out Upcoming
Events for info about the city's Green Up Day this Saturday 5/1).
Spring is also an important time to remember that neighbors are only
a wall away. If you decide to host a social gathering or if
you and your friends are out late at night walking through Burlington
neighborhoods please join the UVM
Have a
Heart Campaign and help reduce late-night noise and disruption in
our community.
OSCR will be out with SGA and Greek volunteers on
Thursday 4/29
doing our Spring Have
a Heart Campaign campus to raise awareness about the impact of late
night
noise and disruption on other students, families,
seniors, professionals, businesses, etc. We also wanted to give
everyone the heads up about the ongoing Quality-of-Life Initiative
implemented
by the Burlington Police Department and UVM Police Services. Each
Spring officers are assigned to joint noise
patrols which target noise,
alcohol, and other late night municipal offenses.
To avoid getting a hefty ticket at the end of the semester make sure
that
you know what your rights and responsibilities are as a tenant and
citizen of Burlington.

There
is Still Time to Be Counted!
 Census
2010 is here and your participation is
needed! Students make up 1/4 of Burlington's population and the
information the census collects helps to determine how more than $400
billion dollars of federal funding each year is spent on infrastructure
and services.
If your 2010 Census form has been lost, damaged,
or was never received in the mail, please contact the Telephone
Questionnaire Assistance center at 1-866-872-6868 to request one. You
will not need the ID # or Barcode Information after April 12. You can
also visit the "Be Counted" area of the Census website to locate a
Questionnaire Assistance Center in your community where you can pick up
a form.

New
Student Parks Pass!
Save on the daily parking fee of $5 at North
Beach, Oakledge Park, Leddy
Park, and Perkins Pier by buying a summer season–long pass for just
$25!
This is a new discounted rate just for college students to encourage
more use of the parks (regular rates $40 Burl. Residents and $60 for  non-residents).
Burlington Parks & Recreation Department Season Park Pass allows
unlimited parking admission to all Burlington Parks except for
Waterfront Park. If you attend school
in
Burlington and stay for the summer you are eligible for
this discounted parking pass. All you need to show is your valid school
ID and a proof of Burlington residency, such as your auto registration,
a utility bill, lease agreement, or other piece of processed mail.

Parks & Recreation
Department at 802-865-7247 for more details, or stop by the offices
at
645 Pine Street to purchase the pass. Passes may also be purchased on
site at the parking gates.
