Tips for Getting Your Security Deposit Back
If you are
moving out of your apartment here are
some tips for getting your security deposit back and making the
transition go as smoothly as possible:
-
When you move out, make sure to clean the
place thoroughly. Clean the oven, refrigerator, bathroom, windows,
floors, etc. If you
do not do this, the landlord may deduct money from your security
deposit. The key is to make sure the apartment/house is in as good, if
not better, condition as when you first moved in.
-
Remove all personal property and dispose of
garbage in bins provided. It is illegal to leave items on the
greenbelt, in a front yard, in a city park, in the street, or on the
sidewalk. Anyone leaving trash in an improper location can be fined up
to $500.
-
Contact ALL the utility companies to
terminate
your services.
-
Remove your name(s) from the mailbox,
and have your
mail held at the post office until they receive your new
address. The post office will forward all your mail when they
receive
your address on a change
of address form.
-
Make arrangements to have your
landlord
examine the apartment/house to get approval before you move out.
You
may save money from your security deposit if minor problems are found
you can repair yourself. If you filled out a Move-In
Check List with your landlord
pull out that document and fill out the Move-Out
Check List portion.
This will help ensure that you document the condition of your unit as
it was on the last day of your lease term.
-
Return your keys to the landlord.
-
Give the landlord your forwarding
address so that your security deposit (and a list of itemized
deductions from the deposit if there are any) can be returned to you
within 14 days from the time you have vacated the apartment. If you
do
not see your security deposit within 14 days you can call VT Tenant's
Inc. (802) 864-0099 for more information on your rights. They also have
Security
Deposit Return
form letters available.
Moving Out? Or Moving In?Come to the Spring Move
Out Project (SMOP)
Recycling Event!
Join us for SMOP on Friday
May
29th from
11am-3:30pm on Loomis Street (between Schoot St. and No. Willard St.).This
event is an opportunity
for people who are moving out to bring their unwanted usable household
items (books, clothes, furniture, appliance, bikes, etc) to a place
where it can be swapped or recycled. SMOP is also an opportunity for
people moving in to a new place to take away great stuff free of
charge!
Please note: Garbage disposal is still the
responsibility of tenants and we do not accept trash at the SMOP event.
Also check out the "Guide
to Moving in Burlington" brochure which has more tips on what to do
with all the stuff you don't want when you are on the move!

Keep
the Stuffed
Stuff Indoors & Grill Safe!
Did you know that putting indoor furniture, like
stuffed couches and chairs, on your outside porch is a fire hazard? Not
to mention, it's illegal in Burlington (up to $500 fine!). There were
two
devastating fires, one in 2007 on Archibald St. and one in 2008 on No. Union St.,
because of porch couches catching on fire due to a misplaced cigarette
flicked by a passerby. Both fires destroyed everything in sight and no
one in either building had renters insurance to cover their losses.
Don't let this happen to you!
Also note that Burlington City Ordinance prohibits
the use of grills and BBQ's on porches because they are also a huge
fire hazard. If your lease allows you to have grill make sure they are
kept at least 15 ft away from any residence or structure.
For more info on fire safety go to page 20 of the
Off Campus Living Survival Guide. Also check out Recycle North to find
cheap plastic furniture that is safe and legal for outdoor porches.

Need
a Subletter?
Need a Sublet?
Connect With Each
Other For FREE!!
Here are the Steps:
1. Go to http://offcampushousing.uvm.edu, click on the
"register here" link, and create a username and password (not your UVM
Net ID/password).
2. If you want to post a FREE sublet Ad make sure to check the "Would
you like to post a sublease Ad for $0?" box on the registration page
3. To post your Ad Click the "add/edit listings" option on the top bar
fill in your info and post it.
4. Before you sublet get permission from your
landlord! If you don't you may be in violation of your lease
agreement. It is also a good idea to fill out a written Sublease
Agreement with your subletter and to take a security
deposit which can be held in case of damage to the apartment. You
should
carefully consider if and to whom you choose to sublease. A problematic
subletter can damage neighbor relationships and make your efforts to be
a good neighbor more difficult. Also note that when subleasing, you are
still responsible to your landlord for the original lease and you also
can be held responsible for any problems created by the new tenant.
Make sure to inform your subletter about city
ordinances
regarding noise, alcohol, trash, parking, etc.
