The situation on the ground remains chaotic, as various armed groups clash with each other and attack civilians with impunity. The United Nations Security Council has authorized a 26,000 strong peacekeeping force for Darfur, but it is far from certain whether the proposed mission will achieve success and finally fulfill the international community's responsibility to protect. The long-neglected peace process has finally attracted the high-level international attention it deserves, but diplomats must remain consistently engaged to ensure that the mediation process gets results.
