The Vermont women's soccer team closed out the 2008 season with a record of 4-13-1 overall and went 2-5-1 in America East in head coach Kwame Lloyd's first season. The Catamounts made a run in the final four games of the year, going 2-1-1, and scored 10 goals in the final five games after managing just 11 in its first 13 games. UVM was in the hunt for a playoff spot through the last regular season match.
In 2009, Lloyd welcomes 13 newcomers to the team and continues to build on the renewed sense of excitement around the program
Q: Year one in the books. What are your thoughts on your first year at the helm of the Catamount women's soccer program?
A: Outside of the results, I am very pleased with our development over the past year. The transition was eased by the help of my former assistant Steph Mead and the players responded well to the different expectations. The University of Vermont is a special place to pursue your education, and our recruiting will reflect how special it is.
Q: Who has made the most improvement from the 2008 season?
A: The 14 returners have made the most improvement since the 2008 season. I extremely proud of our upperclassmen because of their efforts this off-season, and we will benefit from them in all aspects of building our women's soccer family.
Q: What will be the team's strengths and weaknesses in 2009?
A: Our strength this season will be our depth in every position, and our weakness will be our youth.
Q: You have brought in a large freshmen class, what are your thoughts on the newcomers?
A: We have 13 freshmen that are humble and talented; their legacy will be set by how their talent develops, their approach to training, and how they view competition as fun.
Q: What will help the team be more successful in 2009?
A: For the team to be more success in 2009 the first order of business is team chemistry. Second, finishing on the opportunities we have against all opponents, and third, never being satisfied with where we are as a team at any point in the season.
Q: What are the team goals for this year?
A: Our goals for this season are to contend for an America East Championship, and to be able to perform at a consistently high level throughout the season.
Q: The team made a run at the end of last season, just missing out on a playoff spot, what was a key factor in that run and will that momentum carry over into 2009?
A: The key factor to the run at the end of last season was the competitiveness in training, and it was team based rather than being 1v1. The players were more interested in the team success, rather than individual success or playing time. It has carried over to the 2009 season and was jump- started by the upperclassmen. They are a very driven, goal minded, and conscientious group.
