Courtnay's Column

Senior guard Courtnay Pilypaitis is one of the top players in America East. She was named the America East Rookie of the Year in 2007, the league's Player of the Year in 2008, and the Most Outstanding Player of the 2009 America East Women's Basketball Championship after leading UVM the title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

During the 2009-10 season, Pilypaitis will be blogging about the team's season, which began with Vermont's three-game tour of Canada in late August and included two games in Pilypaitis' hometown of Ottawa, Ontario.

Sorry it has been a while since I last blogged. There is plenty to recap from the past couple weeks. There have been some very good moments, and then some teaching moments.

To start the New Year off we won our first conference game against UNH. It was a thriller and a true road game as we only won by two on a buzzer beater shot. I think it was a great test for our newcomers, as they got to see just how tough conference play is.

After that game, we played Nebraska at home. The score was very lopsided for them, but I think we gained a lot from that game. We fought hard the whole game and kept our composure even though we struggled shooting on our own home court. We learned that we have to play a complete 40 minuets to win a game. We had a let down for about six minutes and then they took a six point lead and made it a twenty point lead very quickly.

Its always tough after a blowout loss to feel good about yourself, but our team regrouped quickly and knew that we had a three game homestand that would get us back on track. We played Maine, Albany, and Binghamton. With these games we got back to playing the way we are use to, by getting the first punch in the games, and then continuing to attack and increase our leads. Everyone played very well and we got to see the bench players get more time and experience. Kristine got her career high in points and minutes and Ashley, Tory, and Morgan also got career highs in minutes. It was great to see them play well.

We had one of the best moments that I've had here at UVM just a few days ago, when we were ranked 24th in the country for the first time in 17 years. To finally accomplish a goal that especially the senior class worked for so long was very gratifying.

We found out before our road game against BU. We took that confidence into the game and came out firing to a 16-point lead early in the game. Then the momentum changed and we stopped taking good shots, and playing defense the way we know how too. BU made a big run to end the first half and took a two-point lead. From there we never really were ourselves as a team. We just had one of those days were we were a step slow and struggled to do things that had gotten us to a national ranking.

Needless to say it was a heartbreaking loss for our team. We know what we need to do to get better and are thankful we can get back on track now rather than have a game like that in the tournament.

During this stretch most of our team took a winter session class called Event Planning for Athletics. We would have class in the morning and then practice in the afternoon. As much as we wanted to just relax and have nothing to do, I think we all enjoyed taking the class, and learned how the University of Vermont athletics plans events and what the University tries to do to make each game an experience.

Taking this class was a good way to make the long break between semesters go by quickly, and I personally enjoyed getting to dress up as "Subman" (wearing the Subway mascot outfit, yes, Subway has a mascot, who knew?) for a men's hockey game as well as a men's basketball game.

One of the highlights of the past couple weeks, was when our coaches surprised us with a game of kickball (soccer-baseball for those Canadians out there!) at the end of practice. We had a few memorable moments during the game, one being Coach L sliding into first, which was also close to the sliding of the media tables that were setup for a game that day. He then proceeded to get up and run to second when the pass was overthrown. Another one was one our athletic trainer Alison would like to forget, as she fumbled a pop fly to keep the late inning comeback run from the other team going. Let me tell you the coaches will never let her forget about that one!

That's the latest going on in UVM women's basketball. Hope to see you at Patrick Gym. We've only got three home games remaining in the regular season and I know the seniors are going to savor every minute of them.

Until next time,

What a great way to end 2009!

We got two big wins against Dayton and Rhode Island at the Dartmouth Tournament. It was a great team effort in both games, but TY had an outstanding tournament, getting her career high with 25 points and leading our team to a victory over a talented Dayton team.

She was named MVP of the tournament, which was much deserved! It was awesome to see her have a great pair of games in practically her hometown, she grew up just 15 minutes from the Dartmouth campus and had losts of family and friends in the stands. We are all very proud of her.

As much as TY contributed to our win, I think it may have been Coach L's pregame dancing routine that gave us the win (Sorry no videos of the dance).

Our second game against Rhode Island was more of a grind out game. The second game in the two days is always tough, as your legs always take a little more to get going. We didn't begin the game the way we wanted to, but we finally got it together and found a way to win.

The night before the tournament, there was a banquet and a very unique way of setting it up. Each table had different players from different teams placed at it, so you had to interact and get to know the other players. Some tables were a little more talkative then others, but overall it was a fun way to start off the tournament.

Now we are back to practicing for our upcoming game at UNH. This is our first conference game of the year. Our entire team is excited for it. We have had a good non-conference record, but conference play just brings out even more intensity in every game. It truly is a battle every time we play a conference opponent. I am excited for our freshman to experience the feeling of their first league game, the energy and excitement level is something you cannot explain.

For the seniors on the team, it will be the beginning of a lot of "lasts" for us. It really makes you cherish each moment. I think that the four of us will do our best to make it the best season we've had in our time at Vermont.

I hope that everyone had a great New Year, and that 2010 is the best year yet!

Until next time,

This past week has been a hectic one for our team. We had a tough loss to Oklahoma State, and then had to refocus to take our finals and finish up the semester. I was done early in the week, so I was able to relax and just focus on basketball. Some of my teammates had the unfortunate scheduling of exams on Friday.

Basketball wise we got back to the basics at practice. We worked on being crisp with our passes and moving our feet on defense. We all stepped up our intensity during practice so we can get better each day for our conference play.

We only had one game this week and it was against Providence. One of our practice players, Eli, lives in Rhode Island and had our entire team over for dinner the night before the game. We had a fabulous meal cooked for us by his parents and we were able to relax for a bit after our five-hour drive. It is always great to go to people's house that we spend everyday with and meet their family.

We won the game and overall played well. The first half we did not play our best defense, but we buckled down in the second half to stop a very athletic team. In the second half we got a bit sloppy and allowed Providence to get back in the game. After we settled down we pulled away and held on for the win. Both May and Seto had big games again to lead our team. After the game everyone headed their separate ways for the holiday break.

Our team did get to spread some Christmas cheer, as we went to COTS to donate all the gifts that our great fans donated during the last couple home games. It was great to give back to the community and bring smiles to faces during the holiday season. I want to thank all our fans for their generous donations, we at least doubled the amount of gifts from last year, so thank you to everyone who donated to the cause.

Now we are all heading back home for the holidays, we have a short break until we come back and practice before we head to Dartmouth for a tournament where we play Dayton and URI. I know my team will enjoy the time off and have some holiday feasts with their family.

Hope all you Catamounts fans have a happy holiday season! Can't wait to see you all back in Patrick Gym in 2010!

Until next time,

It has been a long week for our team with four games in seven days in three states but we survived it and got better because of it.

Our first game was against defending champions UConn Huskies and somehow even with them losing an All-American point guard they got better. We didn't play the greatest first half we wanted too, but battled hard in the second half and only lost it by 10 points.

The best thing about playing so many games in a short amount of time is that we were able to rebound as a team. Two days after the Connecticut game we were back on the court against Manhattan. It was a great feeling to come back to Patrick Gym after a tough loss. We had a strong overall team performance against Manhattan. We got back to the basics and got another win before heading back out on the road.

The next day we were off to Massachusetts for two games against Holy Cross and UMass. Our road trip did not have as many laughs as we usually do as everyone had their heads in their books studying for finals and finishing up work. That is one tough thing about being a student-athlete, balancing our academic work with our games.

Our first game against Holy Cross went well with both Seto and May getting their career highs, which I think will be broken multiple times before the season is over. We played really well as a team during this game. We started to get back to playing strong team defense. With that game over with we turned our focus to UMass. We had a good practice going over what they would run and cleaning up some of our sets. We were ready for our last game of the week.

In our last game, we played excellent defense against a very good shooting team. It was one of our better defensive games and is what we needed when not all of our shots were going in on the offensive end. May continued her great play, leading our team in scoring, and really providing us with a spark when we needed it.

Now we are back in Vermont writing exams and finishing the semester up, and looking forward to our game against Oklahoma State. It is a doubleheader with our men's team, and both teams are excited to put on a show for our amazing fans!

Until next time,

This past week has been extremely busy. We had two big games, and it was also American Thanksgiving. I made a point out that is was American since we have our own Thanksgiving in Canada ... more on that later.

Our first game was against Boston College, and it was our first bus trip with this year's team. I'd like to say it went really well we got a big win and a pre-Thanksgiving meal at Coach Dawley's sister's house. The meal was fantastic and it allowed our team to have some quality bonding time. We have some pretty intense eaters on our team, and Ashley Hoyt and Kristine Lalonde take the cake (literally) for the most amount of food consumed.

The second best part of the trip was the game itself. We had plenty of fans, including many alumni cheering us on throughout the game. It is always nice to have road games and feel like you are at home. Our team came out ready to play and everyone had a solid performance. It was great to see our work from our practices during the week show in the game. Lauren Buschmann had an outstanding game for us, and was rewarded with the UVM/Sheraton Athlete of the Week for it, congratulations to her!

We had our first home game of the year against Dartmouth on Wednesday. It was great to be back at Patrick Gym, with all of our amazing fans. I definitely think that we have the best fans in the America East. We did not start out the game very well, we struggled offensively, but stepped it up in the second half and got our fourth straight win. Kendra Seto had another great game and continues to show that she is going to be a great player for us. Alissa Sheftic and Lauren Buschmann also stepped up and hit some shots for us, to start our second half run.

Overall we had a pretty good week of games, but we know we have lots of things to improve on. But after two wins we got two days off to celebrate Thanksgiving with our friends and family. It was weird this year actually being around for American Thanksgiving. Usually we have a game or are traveling. There is not much different about an American Thanksgiving, other than the timing of it. The same foods are made, and families get together to celebrate all that they are thankful for. The biggest difference is that Canadians do not have "Black Friday". I must say I will never attempt to go to a Wal-Mart at 5 a.m. on "Black Friday" in the U.S again! It was way to hectic for my liking.

After two quality days of rest and relaxation it was back to practicing and getting ready for our next game against the national champion UConn Huskies. We are all looking forward to the game and want to compete against the best. We are taking this as a challenge to see where our team is at this point in the season. It is going to be fun to have our freshmen experience playing against UConn on their home court. The returnees know how much fun we had last year.

Following the UConn game we have our second home game of the year. We're going to play Manhattan at 1 p.m. on Saturday (Dec. 5). Hope to see you at Patrick Gym!

Until next time,

Hi Catamounts fans!

For this blog we have a special video documenting the trip to North Carolina. Click Here to check it out.

Our team just got back from playing in the North Carolina State tournament. We had a blast! Road trips are always fun traveling with the Catamounts. We had two hard fought victories to win the tournament. We played Western Michigan in the first round and it went pretty well for us for our first "real" game. I was really impressed with our freshmen. They came in and played like they were veterans. The game was not pretty by any means in the eyes of Coach Dawley, but we grinded it out for our first win and had many things to improve on for our next game.

Our second game was against the home team NC State. It is always a blast playing the home team for the championship. We knew heading into the game that rebounding was going to be the key, so we all buckled down and focused on that. Sofia had an amazing game on the boards for us (10 rebounds), along with Kendra and Lauren B. Playing on the road always leads to some adversity, and I was extremely impressed with how our team handled it. Each one of these games is going to help us down the stretch in the America East.

One of the highlights for me was going to visit Duke University after one of our practices. I am a huge fan of the men's team, and really wanted to see Cameron Indoor Stadium for myself. During our tour of the athletic facilities, we stopped and watched a bit of the Duke women's practice. It is always neat to see how other team's practice and what kind of drills they do. Fortunately for our team they didn't do any crazy conditioning drills that coach could pick up and use at our next practice.

The best part about the trip besides winning the tournament was the travel to and from Raleigh, N.C. When traveling for almost the entire day, you tend to get a little overtired and giddy. This is when you see the true colors of our team. If you are in the airport, you can spot us out easily, we are the group of girls laughing hysterically over one small comment made by another teammate. I love traveling with this group of girls. We always find a way to keep ourselves entertained. In the early going, I have to say that Kendra is in the lead for making our team laugh.

Now we are looking to have a solid week of practices to gear up for our game against Boston College on Sunday, which we know will be a tough game.

One final note, congratulations to Kendra Seto for winning America East Rookie of the Week this week. I am confident it will not be her last award either.

Until next time,

Hi Catamount Fans!

This past week has been a crazy one. We had our Green and Gold scrimmage at the Catamaount Tip-Off. It was my last one ever, so it was sad to know I will never get to judge a dunk contest in Patrick Gym again. We had a great time playing and giving our fans a look at this year's team.

The rest of this week, was some really good practices leading up to our exhibition game against Laval. We worked on a lot of new stuff and finally got to play against someone other than ourselves. The freshmen learned just how crazy I am before games. We lifted on Friday after our practice and I was very excited to be playing the next day and would not stop yelling and getting fired up in the weight room. I think they all are now aware of just how crazy I am.

We won the game against Laval and did some really good things. All our rebounding drills paid off, as we did an outstanding job on the boards. Sofia and Lauren B did an excellent job for us, 15 and 12 rebounds respectively for them! All the freshmen did really well in their first game, the nerves were visible but they did a great job playing hard and fit right into playing Catamount Basketball.

We got great news this week too. The coaches in the conference selected our team as preseason number one. We barely edged out Hartford in the voting and we know this year will be even tougher than last year to repeat as champions. With that being said, I think our team is up to the challenge and working on getting better everyday and pushing ourselves to the max.

We've got one more exhibition game next week against Franklin Pierce at 4:30 p.m.. Franklin Pierce is a very good team so it will be a good final test for us going into the regular season. The game is a doubleheader with the men's team, they host Saint Michael's at 1 p.m., so hopefully we can get everyone in Patrick Gym to support both teams!

Hope everyone had a great Halloween!

Until next time,

October 19
Practices have officially started and we hit the court running hard! It was great to finally get back onto the court for more than an hour and to start the year. It is weird to think that I will never have a preseason again with Coach Goulet or the team. With that said I think that me and the other three seniors are excited to have the best senior year we possibly can.

Practices started off with the usual self-toss, two-ball dribbling, and fast break drills. It's funny how you quickly remember those drills once you get going with them. Having six freshmen on the team, most of the drills are new to them, so a lot of learning and teaching has been happening in the first four practices. We have a lot of talent on our team this year, and everyone is really excited to get going into game action.

We have started putting in our offenses and sets, and of course our fast break. Its no secret that our team likes to run and I think this year we will be even faster! It is a scary thought, but also a great feeling. The chemistry is kicking in very quickly with this team. We all have been continuing our hard work in practice and are having many moments of greatness. But with those moments of greatness also comes some very ugly moments that causes Coach Dawley to tell us "our mulligan is used up". I will tell you it's a bad feeling when Coach says that about 20 minuets into practice.

We are excited to show our fans what our new team will look like at the Catamount Tip Off - Oct. 24 at noon at Patrick Gym. After that we are looking forward to playing against somebody other than our teammates in the first preseason game on Oct. 31 (1 p.m.) against Laval.

Until next time,

October 4
Long time no speak Catamount fans! These past two weeks have been pretty hectic even though we are not in season. Last weekend we hade recruits on campus, which always leads to fun team bonding activities. We had a movies night one night, where we learned that one of our teammates actually owns Josie and the Pussycats Dolls the movie. When learning of this news, we thought it would be a great idea to watch that. It provided some laughs for our team and the recruits. Another day played laser tag, and went apple picking. It was a surprise to find out that a native Vermonter, Rachel had never been apple picking before. She had a blast her first time.

Our team also helped out with the 5k Kevin Robertson Run. Although most us did not run, we cheered on all the participants. Congratulations to Alissa and TY who ran the 5k, and did very well. The Roberson Run was part of Homecoming at UVM and May and I were fortunate enough to attend the UVM Athletic Hall of Fame dinner. We met all the deserving recipients of the award, including a former basketball player, Lori Taylor. It was a pleasure to met her and her family and hear about her experiences as a player at UVM.

During the week our team was busy working out, lifting, doing individuals, playing pickup, and conditioning. Having such a long preseason leads to us being anxious to play. To help with that, our coaches are always looking for ways to spice our workouts up. The first way was to replace one of our conditioning sessions with a game of touch football! This was a big success with our team, and I think we all sweat more than we did when we run. I am happy to say that I was on the winning team, along with Kendra Seto, May, Lauren wheeler, Lauren Bushmann, Morgan Albert, and Sofia Iwobi.

Our second surprise was when the coaches told us that we would do our testing early because if anyone got hurt there would be time for them to recover before practice started. So we went into the weight room the next day anxious and ready to test. To our surprise, instead of going through the testing we got a lesson in hip-hop dancing! It took us a little while to get loose, and really get into it but once we did we had ourselves a nicely choreographed dance routine. It was a great way to get a workout in, as well as share some laughs with our team.

Until next time,

Hi Catamount fans! So this week has been a week of conquering fears for me!

The first obstacle I was able to overcome was heights. Our team did some team bonding and went through a ropes course. I am not a fan of heights, but me and freshman Kristine Lalonde tackled a 35-foot high ladder. The ladder consisted of about six beams and was very unstable. Kristine and I used our teamwork to get all the way to the top, but after the first few beams I did not want to look down. May and Lauren Wheeler also took a stab at the high ladder. It was fun to watch others try to tackle the ladder after I was safely on the ground with two feet.

Other than the ladder, we did a bunch of low level activities, and games that worked on our communication skills and teamwork. We split into two groups. My group consisted of Coach MacAulay, Tory, May, Ashley, Kristine, and Lauren Wheeler (I have to put her whole name because we have two Lauren's on the team! - Lauren Wheeler and Lauren Buschmann).

We make a good team on the court, but just don't ask us to complete a tire swing course, we had a little trouble with that one! We all had a lot of fun and we all got to know each other a little bit better ... Click Here to see a few more photos from the ropes course.

Obstacle #2 was my uneasy feeling I have about public speaking. I was able to semi-conquered was my fear. I have been working all summer on an independent concerning nutrition of female athletes and Thursday I had to make a presentation to the women's basketball, women's hockey, and women's lacrosse teams. It was very intimidating to start with, but once I got going I felt a lot more comfortable. I think it went well overall, and I am relieved that it is over with.

Other than that, this week has been great for our team we had our first hour of team practice! We have a lot of talent and it made us all want to start practice right away! We still have three weeks of preseason to go so were going to have to wait a little bit longer. Until then we just have to keep lifting and running hard!

Until next time,

It is the end of the second week of school and plenty has been going on with our team. We have gotten together and worked out and had a chance to hang out with each other.

The first week of school we had testing with our awesome strength coach Justin. Every single person got personal bests in most of the exercises. In the weight room there is a new a board with the best person on each team for each exercise. All I have to say about that is that May and Kendra Seto's name appear all over the place.

This week we started individuals workouts. We have them twice a week with the coaches and add conditioning and lifting four times a week. In addition to that, we played pickup twice.

It went well, everyone on our team is working hard, but if you see any of us outside of the court and were walking a little slow, you know why - its because we worked so hard this week that none of our muscles can move!

As a team we have lots of fun team activities planned. We have a movie night, ropes course, the 2nd annual Olympics at Coach L's, just to name a few. I am looking forward to spending time with the team and getting to know the freshmen better.

Week one of preseason is done, which means only 35 days until our first practice and I could not be happier!!

Until next time,

Hello Catamounts fans! The team is back from our short but amazing Canadian trip. We made the eight-hour bus ride back from Waterloo this morning. Most of us just slept, or watched movies to pass the time. The biggest excitement on the way back, was being able to turn our cell phones back on and be able to use them once we crossed the border.

Yesterday we played in May's hometown of Waterloo and played the University of Wilfred Laurier. May had about 100 or so fans that came out to support her, so we put on a show for them. We won our game by 37 points, and it was a great way to finish our trip up. May had an amazing game, scoring 37 points herself! After that we went back to the hotel and got ready for dinner at May's house.

We had a great time at May's, there was plenty of delicious food and we also got to catch up with some alumni who made the trip to watch the game. It is always nice catching up with former teammates and coaches. After we ate, some of the players and coaches played football in the backyard. It got pretty competitive. The winners were Coach L May's little cousin and Coach MacAulay.

The trip was an overall success with a record of 3-0 and lots of memories. Now we start school tomorrow, which means we start preseason training with the entire team. I am excited to get started with my senior year and keep our hard work going towards another championship.

Until next time,

Hi Catamount fans! We are on our way to Waterloo, Ontario, May' s hometown. We just finished playing Ottawa University. We won by 28 points and we played well as a team. It was our second game in less than 19 hours with six players. Yesterday we played Carleton University and won by 22 points.

For me personally, it was great to play in my hometown and against some of my old teammates and some close friends. I am really lucky that I got to play in front family and friends who have not seen me play since high school. I was surprised by the amount of people who came out to support me for my two games in Ottawa and very grateful.

Our trip to Ottawa on Thursday was relatively short. We stopped in Cornwall on the way to get some food and ran into Lauren Wheeler an incoming freshman that was on her way to Vermont to move in. It was great to see her. We wished that our freshman could play with us this trip, they can't per NCAA rules. After that we drove to our hotel in Ottawa, and then went and visited the parliament buildings. I would have to say Alissa was the most excited one of us to be there! After a couple pictures (see the slide show), and a quick visit we were off to our pregame meal at my family friend's house.

A lot of my family and friends were at this pregame meal. It was great to have the team meet them and get to know me a little more about my family. Another incoming freshman, Kristine Lalonde and her family came to this gathering so it was nice to catch up with her. The meal was delicious and it was amazing to spend time with my closest friends before our game.

So now we are onto Waterloo, where we get to go to May's house for a get together and another game. Hopefully we will keep getting better, and get our third win in as many days!

Until next time,
CP # 3 Go Cats Go!

August 27, 2009
We head off on our Canada trip today, and we are all really excited! May and I are obviously the most excited, as we get to share our hometowns to the rest of our team. We also have lots of family and friends coming to our games that have not seen us play since we left high school.

We've had two more practices where we worked on our plays some more, and got out some rust from not playing this intense all summer. The team has looked good, but we can always improve. These next three games, will only help us in the rest of the year. Besides practice we had our final two lifts with our strength coach Justin Goulet. The big news of the day today, was May cleaning red and whites! ... for those who don't know what that means, it means May is the second strongest girl at UVM for that lift!. Justin went wild! All of us got personal bests as well.

We had our ring celebration today! We finally all got our America East Championship rings. We have waited all summer to get together, so we can reflect one last time on our great finish last year. I love my ring, they are so nice and just makes me hungry for another championship and another ring. Now that we have our rings, we are ready to go to Canada and show off Catamount basketball!

I can't believe we have a game tomorrow, but very excited about it! I will let you know how it goes.

Until next time,

August 24, 2009
Today we had our first practice in preparation for our Canada trip this weekend! It was great to see everyone back together again, but weird to be practicing in August. Unfortunately our incoming freshman cannot come on the trip with us, so it was just the returnees back at Patrick. Either way it made us all really excited for the upcoming season, and the last season for me. I can't believe it has been three years already, and I am a senior!

Practice started just like it always does; music and two-ball drill! Two-ball is our daily ball handling drill, that we do every day at the beginning of practice. If you have seen our team play before, you know that sometimes our drills turn into more of dancing than basketball. We ran through some basic drills and plays to get us all back on the same page again. Everyone looked really good, and you could tell we all worked really hard in the summer. Hopefully this season the hard work will pay off.

We only have seven players for this trip, so practice reminds me of my high school days when I only had seven teammates. It makes trying to do some drills at practice hard, a lot more running for us all! After practice we got a quick lift in, and then left for the day to relax and rest our bodies for practice tomorrow.

Till next time...
