BURLINGTON, Vt. The University of Vermont men's and women's track and field teams, along with student-athletes Leah Grout (Newark, Vt.) and Doug Masiey (Gwynedd Valley, Pa.) have earned all-academic awards from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA).
Grout, the America East Outdoor Champion in the high jump, was one of five student-athletes from the league to be recognized on the women's all-academic team. Grout is an environmental science major and carries a 3.34 grade point average.
Maisey, the team's MVP for the outdoor season, was one of four student-athletes to earn a spot on the men's all-academic team. He became the first distance runner in the history of the men's program to represent the Catamounts at the NCAA Regionals.
He qualified for the postseason meet after placing second in the 3,000m Steeplechase at the America East Championships with a time of 9:04.22. Maisey earned all-conference honors in both the 3,000m Steeplechase and the 5,000m at the league's championship meet. He finished 17th overall in his first NCAA appearance. Maisey owns a 3.26 GPA as a recreation management major at Vermont.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, student-athletes must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and have met either the NCAA Division I Indoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard or the NCAA Division I Outdoor regional or national qualifying standard in their respective event.
Additionally, both Catamount teams earned Division I All-Academic honors from the organization. The men's squad was one of 67 programs recognized after posting a 3.208 team GPA, while the women's were among 130 teams honored after earning a 3.331 team GPA. To be nominated, the team must carry a minimum 3.000 cumulative GPA.
