What are the team's goals heading into the season?
GC: Our main goal is to continue to build on the success of the previous years. We are coming off another great season and with a solid freshmen class coming in, we feel that Vermont swimming and diving can have an even stronger season this year.
You have another challenging schedule lined up for this season. Do you think a tough non-conference schedule helps the team really prepare for the America East Championship?
GC: As the program has gotten stronger over the past nine seasons it has been important to put a schedule together that allows our athletes to compete against other top programs. I feel that the more they are challenged during the season the stronger mentally they will be during the conference championship.
What are the strengths of the incoming class and what kind of impact do you think they can make?
GC: One of the biggest strength of this freshmen class is the diversity, talent and excitement they bring to the team. This year we have 12 swimmers and two strong divers coming into the program and each one has the potential to score heavy at championships.
Each year with increased success do increased expectations follow?
GC: I enter every season with extremely high expectations. As the level of team success grows each season, such as finishing higher on the America East Championships, the team expectations do get higher. I want our ladies to strive to be the best. In order for this to happen each team member needs to push each other. I know that I come into every season looking to win and I expect our athletes to think the same way. I feel our program should expect nothing but the best from the staff and each other.
In each of the last four seasons the team has improved at the America East Championships. Coming off of a school-best third place showing last year, do you think the team can continue the climb up the standings?
GC: I feel that this season our team is very deep and talented, and this depth will certainly be an asset at the conference meet. We enter every season feeling that we are in position to compete for the league championship and I know that our athletes are approaching this season the same way.
Seniors Colleen Clark and Molly MacMillan have each won back-to-back America East Championships. What do you expect to see out of the two of them this season?
GC: During the off-season both Colleen Clark and Molly MacMillan worked very hard to prepare themselves for their last year. They have set high goals for themselves and I feel they can achieve them. I feel that both of them have the ability to repeat and I am looking forward to seeing them finish very strong this season.
Having veteran swimmers returning who have proved they can win at the conference level, does this help push some of the underclassmen or give them goals to strive for?
GC: Having a strong veteran team that has experienced tremendous success in our program has given our underclassmen the confidence that they too can have the same level of success.
Having won 10 of your last 13 against conference opponents, do you think the team has received more respect throughout the league?
GC: Winning 10 out of our last 13 meets against conference opponents is a great accomplishment. I feel that the team has earned the respect of the league because of the way that they represent themselves on and off the deck. Our ladies work very hard throughout the season and this hard work is reflected in the results we have been able to get.
What are some of the key meets that stand out to you this year?
GC: As the program has become more competitive each season it is important that our schedule reflects the competition our athletes will need to help them compete at a higher level. This season our ladies need to be ready to compete every weekend. Our opening meet against Army, Stony Brook and Boston College on October 9 will be a real test for us right out of the gate. Later that month we face conference champion Boston University, who we competed against hard last season. This year we added Yale to the schedule in December. Yale has a rich history in swimming and diving and I am excited to see how our team competes. Second semester we are hosting Navy, who last season sent three athletes to the NCAA Championship meet.
