America East Release
BURLINGTON, Vt. – A total of 144 University of Vermont student-athletes were named to the 2005-06 America East Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll for earning grade-point averages of 3.0 or higher. Included among the 144 student-athletes were 67 that earned a spot on the Commissioner’s Honor Roll, acknowledging grade-point averages of 3.5 or higher during the academic year. Vermont boasts the second most representatives on the overall honor roll and also on the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Junior Martin Klimes (Prague, Czech Republic) was named the America East Men’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete.

Vermont has won back-to-back America East Academic Cups (2005, 2006) after posting a conference-high 3.14 GPA during the 2005-06 season. The Catamounts became the first institution in conference history to win the award three times (winning the inaugural academic cup in 1996). The 3.14 GPA ties the highest grade-point average in the 11-year history of the award, which the Catamounts set last season.

In all, 1,174 student-athletes in America East were honored, with 496 named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Vermont had the third-highest percentage of student-athletes named to the Academic Honor Roll (53.9 percent, 144 of 267).

The UVM women’s indoor and outdoor track and field teams led the Vermont contingent with 28 members each making the academic honor roll. Men’s indoor and outdoor track and field, along with swimming and diving, each had 24 student-athletes honored. Women’s lacrosse was next in line with 18 and was followed by men’s lacrosse (15), softball (12), women’s basketball (8), baseball (8) and men’s basketball (7).

A member of the 2006 America East Men’s Basketball All-Academic Team and a third team all-conference selection, Klimes excels in the classroom as a business administration major with a concentration in finance. He has been a member of the America East Academic Commissioner’s Honor Roll (3.5 GPA or higher) each year at UVM. Fluent in three languages (English, Czech and German), he is a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma National Business Honor Society and has twice won department awards. In 2003-04, he was named the top sophomore business administration student and in 2004-05, he earned the Ozzie Nyquist Award as UVM’s most outstanding junior in the areas of accounting or finance.

Vermont has now had the America East Men’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete in each of the last four seasons, as David Hehn ’05 took home the honor in 2003-04 and 2004-05, while Grant Anderson ’03 won it in 2002-03. Klimes is the second UVM student-athlete to earn America East Scholar-Athlete honors in 2005-06, as field hockey senior Merrie-Beth Maynard (Waterbury Center, Vt.) earned the distinction in the fall.

A scholar-athlete in each of the 16 winter/spring championship sports was selected by a committee of athletic administrators and NCAA Faculty Athletics Representatives. Each honoree was a starter or prominent reserve and carried a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.20.
