With a young squad that featured 10 underclassmen on a roster of 14, the University of Vermont softball team finished the 2009 season with an overall record of 8-38 and went 4-17 in America East play.

LAST TIME OUT: Terren Hall went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in to lead Maine to a 7-4 victory over Vermont on May 3. The game was “Senior Day” for Catamounts Jeanine Connolly and Alison Daggett.

CONFERENCE RECOGNITION: Freshmen Kellin Haley and Rebecca Heimbigner were both named to the America East All-Rookie Team on May 6. The Catamounts were one of four schools to have two representatives on the squad. Haley finished the year second on the team in batting average and third in runs scored (9), hits (29) and doubles (6). She also led the team in stolen bases as she swiped 10 in 11 attempts on the season. Haley played in all 46 games as a freshman, making 45 starts. Heimbigner was one of only two Catamounts to start all 46 games this past season. She finished tied for the team lead in doubles (8) and runs scored (11), as well as posting the second-most hits on the squad (33). Heimbigner’s 33 hits were the most for a Vermont freshman since 2004.

HIGHLY RANKED: Seniors Alison Daggett and Jeanine Connolly both finished their careers ranked in the top 10 all-time at Vermont in the record books. With nine home runs Daggett tied for third in school history, while in the circle she finished tied for third in career appearances (75), fifth in career strike outs (252), and eighth in innings pitched (326.2). Connolly ended her career tied for fifth in career walks (42) and tied for eighth in career home runs (5). This year the duo tied for the ninth-most home runs in a single season in school history with three each.

GET OUT THE BROOM: Vermont swept Binghamton on April 4-5, taking all three games. The three-game sweep marked the first time the Catamounts had accomplished the feat against a league opponent since they swept the same Bearcat squad during the 2007 season. It also marked only the third time in the last six years that Vermont took all three in a series against a conference squad.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK: Freshman Rebecca Heimbigner was named the America East Rookie of the Week on April 6. Heimbigner had a big week for the Catamounts, hitting .400 in six games. She went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored in the second game of a doubleheader against #23 UMass. Heimbigner was also instrumental in the Catamount’s three-game sweep over Binghamton. In Vermont’s 10-3 victory in the first game of a doubleheader she went a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI, two runs scored and a pair of doubles.

AGAINST THE FIELD: Vermont played six teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament this season for a combined 10 contests: Boston U (3), Stanford (2), Massachusetts (2), Canisius (1), Long Beach State (1) and San Diego State (1).

AROUND THE HORN: Vermont’s five wins at home this year were the most since 2006 … The Catamounts went 3-0 when scoring eight or more runs on the year … UVM played a school record 46 games this past season … The Cats played their first 26 games of the season on the road, but wrapped up the year with their last seven at home.
