BURLINGTON, Vt. – Terren Hall went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in to lead Maine to a 7-4 victory over the University of Vermont softball team on Sunday afternoon. Sunday’s game was “Senior Day” for Catamounts Jeanine Connolly (West Bridgewater, Mass.) and Alison Daggett (Fort Collins, Colo.). Vermont finishes the season 8-38 overall and 4-17 in America East play.
With Maine leading 1-0, the Catamounts answered in the bottom of the first.
With one out sophomore Caroline
Goddard (Oakland, Calif.) was hit by a pitch, stole second and
moved to third on a throwing error. Connolly then brought Goddard in with a
double to left to tie the score.
The Black Bears extended their lead to 5-1 with a pair of runs in both the
second and third innings. Courtney Gingrich platted the first run with a
double to left-center and Maine also scored on an error in the second. In
the third Hall had a RBI triple and scored on a Gingrich single up the
middle.
The Cats cut the Maine lead to 5-3 with two runs in the bottom of the
fifth. With the bases loaded and one out Connolly drove in sophomore Katie
Sisson (Underhill, Vt.) with a sacrifice fly to right and freshman
Rebecca
Heimbigner (Napa, Calif.) would later score on an error.
Maine (32-22, 12-9 America East) added two runs in the sixth, to go back on
top by four at 7-3. The first run crossed the plate on an error and Hall
knocked in the second with a RBI single to left.
Vermont scored its final run of the afternoon in the bottom of the sixth.
With two outs freshman Tasha
Manning (Ellsworth, Maine) walked and classmate Bree
Cassidy (Mission Viejo, Calif.) singled. Manning would then touch
home as Heimbigner singled through the right side of the infield.
Jenna Balent earned the win for Maine in the circle, throwing a complete
game. Connolly led the Catamounts at the place by going 1-for-3 with two
RBI, while Heimbigner went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a run batted
in.
