Notebook
The University of Vermont softball team wraps up the
regular season this weekend when it plays host to Maine in America East
action. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday (12 p.m.) and
then a single game on Sunday (12 p.m.). Prior to Sunday’s contest,
Catamounts Jeanine Connolly and Alison Daggett will be honored as part of
“Senior Day.”
LAST
TIME OUT: Brooke Hudson and Nora Militz combined to go 5-for-7 with
seven runs batted in to lead Boston University to an 11-2 victory in six
innings over the Vermont softball team on Sunday afternoon.
MAINE:
The Black Bears are 30-21 overall and 10-8 in conference play entering the
last weekend of the regular season. Maine is tied for sixth in the
conference standings, but is only one game out of fourth place. Alexis
Souhlaris is one of the top offensive threats in the league, as she leads
the Black Bears in batting average (.401), stolen bases (22) and home runs
(12), and is second in doubles (12) and runs batted in (32). Jenna Balent
is the team’s top pitcher with a 12-4 mark and a 1.84 earned run average.
Maine is 8-6 on the road this season and took two out of three from the
Catamounts last year.
LONG BALL: Sophomore Laura Stagliano hit a solo home run on Sunday
against Boston University for her first of the season and the second of her
career. Stagliano is the first Catamount this season other than seniors
Alison Daggett and Jeanine Connolly, who are tied for the team lead with
three apiece, to go deep.
FRESHMEN RANKS: Freshman Rebecca Heimbigner’s 31 hits are the most
for a Catamount freshman since Kate Ramsey (45) and Kate DeForge (38) in
2004. Heimbigner also has a team-best eight doubles this season, which is
one shy of tying for the ninth-most in a single season in program history.
Her eight doubles are also the most for a Catamount since Whitney Borisenok
had 11 in 2006.
COME FROM BEHIND: Vermont trailed Dartmouth 1-0 heading into the
bottom of the sixth on April 23, before tying the score and then earning
the walk-off win in the eighth. With two outs and the score tied in the
bottom of the eighth, Rachelle Boone kept the Cats’ chances alive with a
single up the middle. Jeanine Connolly followed and hit a shot over the
leftfielder’s head as Boone hustled around from first to provide the
game-winning tally. Two of Vermont’s seven victories this season have
come in extra innings.
RECORD BOOK UPDATE: Senior Alison Daggett ranks in the top 10
all-time at Vermont in four different statistical categories. With nine
home runs she is currently tied for third in school history. In the circle
Daggett is fifth in career strike outs, fifth in appearances and ninth in
innings pitched.
GET OUT THE BROOM: Vermont swept Binghamton on April 4-5, taking all
three games. The three-game sweep marked the first time the Catamounts had
accomplished the feat against a league opponent since they swept the same
Bearcat squad during the 2007 season. It also marked only the third time in
the last six years that Vermont took all three in a series against a
conference squad.
AROUND THE HORN: Vermont’s four wins at home this year are the
most since 2006 (5) … The team’s 32 doubles are tied for the most since
2006 … In all seven of Vermont’s wins this year, it has held its
opponent to three runs or less … Only two Catamounts have started all 43
games this season, freshman Rebecca Heimbigner and sophomore Laura
Stagliano.
