BURLINGTON, Vt. – Boston University used two Stephen Knox goals to defeat the University of Vermont 2-1 in men’s soccer action Wednesday afternoon at Centennial Field.
The win sealed the No. 6 seed for the Terriers in the America East Tournament, which is scheduled to start November 7. The loss eliminates the Catamounts, who could have earned the No. 6 seed with a win.
“I just thought they were better,” UVM head coach Jesse Cormier said. “I thought they had more of the mentality to win the game and we didn’t. I thought this game epitomized our season in a sense. We just came up short in a couple of key areas and a couple of key moments.”
Knox recorded his first goal of the game 32 minutes into the first half when he was able to redirect a pass from Samuel Appiah past senior goalie Tom Critz (Enfield, Conn.) to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead.
Knox was then able to extend the lead to 2-0 less than a minute into the second half when he rebounded his own shot past Critz for his fourth goal of the season.
Sophomore Yannick Lewis (Toronto, Ontario) notched his second goal of the season with less than five minutes remaining in the game. Lewis was able to cut the lead to 2-1 when T.J. Gore (Macomb, Mich.) sent a long pass into the 18-yard box where Marty Galvin (No. Weymouth, Mass.) got his head on the ball and sent it Lewis’ way. Lewis quickly got his foot on the ball to beat Hrafn Davidsson to the inside post.
Vermont finishes the 2009 season with a record of 1-10-5 and 1-5-2 in America East play. Boston U. improves to 8-6-2 and 2-4-0 in America East action.
Critz made three saves in the losing effort, while Davidsson made three to preserve the win. Vermont outshot Boston U. 11-9 in the contest.
