DURHAM, N.H. – A goal in the 71st minute gave the University of New Hampshire a 1-0 win over the University of Vermont men’s soccer team on Saturday afternoon. The loss was the first loss in America East action for the Catamounts.
Despite the loss, UVM head coach Jesse Cormier thought his team had a good performance, just made mistakes at critical times.
“We had a good performance overall, but we still refuse to be brave enough to step into the big moments that decide the outcome of the game on both sides of the ball,” Cormier said. “We did a lot right today, but not at the critical times when the match is decided. We are still looking for the player or players who will be the difference in deciding the game in our favor.”
Robin Gerum was able to take a Chris Banks assist to beat senior goalie Tom Crtiz (Enfield, Conn.) for the game-winning goal. The goal was Gerum’s first of the 2009 season.
Banks put a long throw in inside the 18-yard box when he found Gerum on the left side of the box. Gerum was able to corral the pass and bury a shot past Critz inside the post.
While neither team recorded 10 shots in the game, UVM outshot UNH 8-6 as well as having a commanding 8-1 lead on corner kicks. However, they couldn’t find the back of the net as Wildcat goalie Colin O’Donnell made three saves in the win.
The loss drops the Catamounts to 1-7-5 on the season and 1-1-2 in America East action, while New Hampshire improves to 7-5-1 overall and remains undefeated in America East games with a record of 4-0-0.
UVM will return to action on Wednesday, October 21 when it travels to Stony Brook. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
