Cats Stop St. Michael's, 15-2, as Geary Records Win in Net

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Vermont’s Chris Legare (Derry, N.H.) and Sean Layton (Wilmington, Mass.) each had three goals and Mark Prior (Syracuse, N.Y.) had two goals and two assists as the Catamounts defeated their crosstown rivals, the Saint Michael’s Purple Knights, 15-2, Tuesday in men’s lacrosse action at UVM’s Centennial Field.

Vermont, 6-8, scored the first five goals of the game and hada a 6-1 lead at the half before scoring six goals in the third quarter to break it open. Mike Maher (Huntington Station, N.Y.) had three assists for the Catamounts, while Adam Kornuth (Denver, Colo.) had two assists and Matt Smith (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) had a goal and an assist. Other goal scorers for Coach Steve Beville’s team were Dan Zwirko (Longmeadow, Mass.), Mike Rockoff (Hingham, Mass.), Myles Jewell (Sudbury, Mass.), Joe Campbell (Columbus, Ohio), Jim Westcott (Hartford, Conn.) and Kyle Legnos (Mystic, Conn.). Matt Kiernan (Hingham, Mass.) and Bill Wilson (Baltimore, Md.) also recorded assists for the Cats. For Saint Michael’s, 4-8, Mike Curley and Brandon Kobelt each scored, and Brady Boyle and Tristan Baldoni recorded assists. In net, Vermont’s Matt Geary (Marshfield, Mass.) got the win, recording seven saves and allowing one goal in 45 minutes of action. Brian McDonald (Hopkinton, Mass.) and Daryl Swarts (Ann Arbor, Mich.) both saw action in the fourth quarter, combining for three saves. For the Purple Knights, Brian Hingston had nine saves in three quarters of play and Robert McCarthy stopped four shots in the final frame. Vermont hosts Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC) Saturday at 1:00pm in the final home game of the regular season. A win by the Catamounts puts them in the America East tournament. Student Appreciation Day will be held before the game, with free food from Nectar’s and Kevin’s Wicked Mountain Dogs available from 11:00am to 12:00pm. Besides the lacrosse game, the UVM baseball team will play at doubleheader against Maine at 12:00pm.
