STORY LINES
-No. 3 Vermont (22-11-5, 15-8-4 HEA) has advanced to the Frozen Four for
the second time in program history with the last appearance coming on
Thursday, March 28, 1996 at Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Vermont dropped a 4-3 double overtime decision to Colorado College in the
Frozen Four that year in a game that took 89 minutes and 31 seconds. At the
time of the game it was the eighth longest contest in NCAA history. The
game was scheduled to start at 2 p.m. but was delayed due to problems with
the cooling system under the ice.
-Vermont's last Frozen Four team featured current NHL All-Stars Martin St. Louis '97 of the Tampa Lightning and Tim Thomas '97 of the Boston Bruins. Eric Perrin '97 of the Atlanta Thrashers was also a member of the team. St. Louis was a three-time Hobey Baker Award finalist and three-time NCAA All-American with the Catamounts. His 267 points (91g, 176a) still ranks first all-time at UVM. Thomas was a two-time NCAA All-American and ranks second all-time in NCAA history in saves (3,950). Perrin was a Hobey Baker Award finalist, NCAA All-American, and ECAC Player of the Year in 1996. Perrin ranks first all-time in goals (107) and second (256) in points at UVM.
-Vermont advanced to the Frozen Four with a 3-2 double overtime victory against Air Force in the East Regional championship game at Bridgeport Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Conn., on March 28. The game went 94:10 and moved past Vermont's match-up with Colorado College (89:31) in the 1996 Frozen Four as the longest game in program history. Sophomore defenseman Dan Lawson scored two goals, including the game winner with 5:50 left in double overtime, on his way to earning East Regional Most Outstanding Player honors. Referees Marco Hunt and Todd Anderson reviewed the eventual game-winning goal for more than 12 minutes, after Lawson shot the puck through the net. Vermont defeated Yale 4-1 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. Freshman goalie Rob Madore stopped 70 of 73 shots (.959 save percentage) in the two East Regional games and earned Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week. Madore turned away 11 of 13 grade-A opportunities in the win against the Falcons. Junior Viktor Stålberg had a goal, an assist and 14 shots in the two games on his way to being named to the East Regional All-Tournament Team.
20 YEAR ANNIVERSARY
Kevin Sneddon is in the NCAA Tournament for the first time as a head coach
this year but he is no stranger to the tournament. 2009 marks the 20th
anniversary of the 1989 Harvard Crimson national championship team that
Sneddon was a part of as a freshman defenseman. Harvard defeated Minnesota
4-3 in overtime on Thursday, April 1, 1989 in St. Paul, Minn., to win the
school's only national championship in men's hockey. Sneddon was named to
the Frozen Four All-Tournament Team.
ELITE COMPANY
Vermont, Notre Dame and Ohio State are the only three Division I schools in
the country to have their men's hockey and men's and women's basketball
teams qualify for postseason tournaments in 2009. The Vermont women's
basketball team won the America East conference and advanced to the NCAA
Tournament as a No. 16 seed and faced top-ranked and unbeaten Connecticut
in the opening round. The Vermont men's basketball team advanced to the
second round of the College Basketball Invitational before losing to the
eventual tournament champion Oregon State, 71-70, in overtime.
