BURLINGTON, Vt.Marqus Blakely (Metuchen, N.J.), Mike Trimboli (Norwalk, Conn.) and Garvey Young (Washington, D.C.) combined for 69 points on 26-for-35 shooting from the floor to lead Vermont to an 88-71 victory over Dartmouth on Tuesday night at Patrick Gym. The Catamounts shot 59.3 percent from the floor for the game as they earn their third straight win and improve to 4-2 on the year.

Young went for a career-high 19 on 6-for-8 shooting off the bench, while both Blakely (27) and Trimboli (23) added season-highs. Blakely also earned his third double-double of the year as he grabbed a game-high 11 boards.

“I thought Dartmouth did a good job and gave us a good battle,” said Vermont head coach Mike Lonergan. “I think Mike Trimboli had a great game, obviously Garvey played real well and Marqus was very good especially offensively. Dartmouth hung in there and battled. I give (Alex) Barnett a lot of credit. We didn’t have an answer for him and he lit us up.”

Vermont opened the game on an 8-0 run as it would go on to shoot a sizzling 65.4 from the floor in the first half. Dartmouth (1-5, 0-0 Ivy League) on the other hand connected on only one of its first 10 attempts. A 16-6 run by the Cats would give them their biggest lead of the half at 35-25 with 3:05 to go, as they took a 42-34 edge into the locker room.

A three by Dartmouth’s Alex Barnett would cut the visitors deficit to three at 55-52 with 12:05 remaining, but Vermont answered with a 15-2 run over the next 3:51 to put the game out of reach and take a 70-54 lead. Trimboli led the charge with seven in the run, as eight of the 15 points came from the free throw line.

Vermont held a 36-24 edge on the boards and had 23 assists on 32 baskets on the evening. Barnett led all scorers with 32 on 12-for-19 shooting, while Ronnie Dixon added 15 for the Big Green.

Vermont is back in action on Saturday when the Cats travel to face #3 Pittsburgh at 7 p.m. The game can be heard live on DOT 96.7 FM and WEAV 960 AM, and on the internet at www.uvmathletics.com with the audio stream provided by sportsjuice.com.
