Highlights
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Julia Garrison scored the only goal of the contest in the second half to lead visiting Columbia to a 1-0 victory over the University of Vermont field hockey team on Sunday afternoon at Moulton Winder Field. The Catamounts fall to 1-15 on the season with the non-conference loss.
After a scoreless first half the Lions (7-7) picked up their offensive
intensity, leading to the Garrison goal. The junior carried the ball into
the circle from the right side and fired a shot that just beat Catamount
keeper Brooke
Crane (Lancaster, N.H.) stick side. Garrison came off the bench to
lead Columbia with four shots on goal on the day.
Vermont had its best scoring opportunity early in the first half when
freshman Taylor
Silvestro (Walpole, Mass.) had a shot in front of the cage that was
deflected wide.
Columbia out shot Vermont 10-0 in the deciding second half and 11-3
overall for the game. The Lions also held a 4-2 advantage in penalty corner
attempts, with all four coming after halftime. Crane earned her first start
of the season for the Cats, as she stopped six shots. Columbia’s Erin
Conway earned the shutout without recording a save.
Vermont returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Fairfield in America
East action starting at 12 p.m.
