ORONO, Maine – Zoe Adkins scored twice to lead Maine to a 4-1 victory over the University of Vermont field hockey team in America East action on Saturday afternoon. The Catamounts led 1-0 in the game, but Maine scored the final four goals of the contest to pull out the win.

One of the top offensive teams in the nation, the Black Bears (12-4, 3-1 America East) entered the contest third in the country in goals per game averaging just under four and a half.

Vermont (1-14, 0-4 America East) struck first when sophomore Mackenzie Williams (Rome, N.Y.) broke a scoreless tie 18:41 into the game. Williams recorded her first of the season as she took a shot from the top of the circle that beat Maine goalkeeper Brittany Fleck.

Adkins tied the score with her first of the day at the 21:36 mark. Maine would strike quick, as the Black Bears scored their four goals all in a span of 9:56. Adkins scored what proved to be the game-winner off a feed from Jocelyn Mitchell, giving Maine a 2-1 edge in the 26th minute of play.

Michelle Niedziejko and Stephanie Gardiner each added goals for the Black Bears, who clinched a spot in the America East Tournament with the win. Maine out shot Vermont 37-3 for the contest and held a 16-3 edge in penalty corner attempts. Catamount senior Kristen Heavens (Harwinton, Conn.) made a career-high 23 saves in the contest, while Fleck finished with one stop in the win.

The Cats return to action tomorrow when they host Columbia starting at 2 p.m.
