TAMPA, Fla. – A two-run homer by Joey Angelberger with two outs
in the bottom of the 12th gave South Florida a 6-5 win over Vermont in
college baseball Tuesday night at Red McEwen Field.
It was the third extra inning loss this season for the Catamounts (1-10) who for 11 innings played even with the Bulls (11-11), a perennial national power in their first season in the Big East after moving over from Conference USA.
Vermont had taken a 5-4 lead in the top of the 12th. Will Huntington (Montville, Conn.) was hit by a pitch and was sacrificed to second by Bryan Rembisz (Clinton. Conn.). On an 1-2 pitch, Kyle Brault (Milton, Vt.) singled to left to score Huntington. In the bottom of the 12th, McHargue led with a single through the left side and pinch runner Cassidy was bunted to second. Cassidy moved to third on a ground out before Angelberger drilled a 2-0 offering by Justin Albert (Hull, Mass.) deep to left field to give the Bulls the win.
After USF scored a single run in the third, Vermont jumped ahead with three in the top of the fourth. Jim Chapman (Bourne, Mass.) opened with a double to right and moved to third on an error. With two outs, Jay Iannoni (Foxboro, Mass.) singled in Chapman and then scored the go-ahead run on a double by Kyle Massie (Rutland, Vt.). Jason Carey (Colchester, Vt.) hit the Cats third double of the inning to plate Massie to make it 3-1.
USF would get one back in their half of the fourth on a RBI-single by Angelberger (3-for-6, 3 RBI) before Brault in the fifth, hit his second homer of the season to give the Cats a 4-2 lead. The Bulls cut the deficit to 4-3 with an unearned run in the sixth and then tied it on three straight singles in the eighth.
Both Vermont pitchers, starter Brandon Miles (Berlin, Conn.) and Albert in relief, had solid outings against the Bulls who came into the game hitting .295 as a team. Miles went 6.1 innings giving up six hits and two earned runs while walking one and striking out three. Albert, a freshman lefty, went 5.1 innings giving up six hits, four walks and had five strikeouts.
In addition to Brault (2-for-6, 2 RBI), Chapman went 2-for-6, Iannoni, in his first game of the season, went 2-for-3 and Massie went 2-for-2 with a walk and two sacrifices.
Ryan Lau (1-1), the fourth South Florida hurler, picked up the victory.
The Catamounts are back in action Wednesday at noon playing Illinois in Bradenton, Florida. UVM wraps up its spring break trip taking on Ohio State Thursday (3:00pm) and Friday (10:00am).
