BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Jason Carey and Jeff Barry lifted Vermont to a 6-5 win in the opener but Steve Emmerthal tossed a one-hitter to give the Great Danes a 4-0 win in the nightcap as the two schools split a America East baseball double header at Centennial Field on Sunday afternoon.
Barry went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer, Carey went 3-for-4 with two doubles and 2 RBI while Jamie Merchant improved to 5-0 as the Catamounts held off Albany in game one. Barry, last year’s America East Player of the Year, had been fighting a 2-for-18 slump but homered deep to left center with Bobby Tewksbary aboard in the first to give UVM a 2-1 lead. UVM added a single run in the second and UA tallied one in the top of the fourth before Vermont, behind two-out RBI singles by Carey and Kyle Brault (2-for-4), made it 5-3 in the bottom of the inning.
In the sixth, Carey doubled home Jay Iannoni with two outs to make it 6-3 before the Great Danes threatened again in the seventh. Merchant, who scattered 11 singles on the day, walked the Brendan Chiavarro to open the inning and was relieved by Justin Bissonnette. Jason Martin (4-for-4) singled and after a wild pitch and two strikeouts, Kurt Zimnewicz’ single made it 6-5. Bissonnette struck out Fred Estes to pick up his first save of the season and his UVM-record 11th of his career.
Game two was a solid pitchers duel between Emmerthal and the Catamounts’ Derek Miller for four-plus innings. Miller had allowed just three singles until the fifth when he hit Estes and Brad Daniels singled to open the frame. He struck out Tony Vallone and then hit Joe Lamb to load the bases. After getting Chiavaro to pop out, Dan Schoonmaker cleared the bases with a grand-slam homer to right field.
That was more than enough for Emmerthal who allowed just two baserunners all game. He walked Tewksbary to lead off the first and then Tewksbary blooped a double behind second base with two outs in the third. In keeping the Vermont hitters off balance, Emmerthal (4-4) struck out six and picked up 10 outs on pop ups or fly ball outs in recording the Great Danes first shutout of the season.
With the split, the Catamounts are now 19-8 and 4-2 in the America East while Albany is 15-21 and 8-6 in the conference. The two teams play another twinbill on Monday at noon.
A schedule note for Vermont: due to playing this week on Monday, UVM will not play their make-up double header at Northeastern on Wednesday. The two schools will try again at a later date.
