PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. –Strong pitching and timely late-inning hitting gave Vermont a triple-header sweep over Pace in collegiate baseball on Sunday at Finnerty Field. The Catamounts won game one, 8-2, took the middle game, 3-1 in eight innings and then wrapped up the day with a come-from-behind, 5-3 victory in eight innings.
With the three wins, Vermont (13-4) extended its winning streak to eight games and now has won nine of the last ten. UVM pitchers combined to strikeout 34 hitters in the three games on Sunday and over the four-game sweep, they gave up just seven runs. Through 17 games, Vermont’s team ERA is a miniscule 2.66 while opponents have mustered a .211 batting average.
In the opener, Derek Miller scattered six hits, fanned 12 and walked just one in six and two-third innings. In the middle frames, the sophomore lefty struck out seven straight in improving to 2-1.
Barry Chamberland went 3-for-3 (double, RBI) and Kyle Brault went 2-for-4 to trigger the offense. UVM led 4-1 heading into the seventh when Brault put away the Setters (4-25) with a three-run homer, his team-high fourth of the season.
Senior Brian Robinson also was dominating in the second game in recording his first win of the season. Robinson gave up three hits and also struck out 12 in seven innings before giving way to Brett Dobens, who picked up the save.
Tied 1-1, UVM went ahead with a pair in the eighth. Raymond Montanez led with a walk and was sacrificed to second. Nick Roberts, who had four hits on the day, doubled home Montanez with the lead run and then scored two batters later on a wild pitch.
The Cats used late-game offense to hand Pace their 11th straight defeat in the finale. Down 3-2 in the top of the seventh, Jason Carey led off with a double and moved to third on an infield hit by Montanez. Carey then tied the game coming in on a wild pitch. In the eighth, Bobby Tewksbary, who hit his first career homer in the first, and Chamberland opened with singles. Jay Iannoni moved both runners up with a sacrifice before Brault scored Tewksbary with a sacrifice fly and then Montanez plated Chamberland with a base-hit to right.
Jeff Dixon pitched the seventh and picked up the win to improve to 4-0 while Jared Slater earned his first career save. The two relievers picked up for starter Justin Bissonnette, who in six innings allowed six hits, three runs, one walk and had seven K’s.
After playing the first 17 games away from home, the Catamounts return to Burlington and will host Siena at 2:00pm on Tuesday at Centennial Field.
