BRADENTON, Fla. – Junior Justin Bissonnette (Colchester, Vt.) threw six solid innings from the mound and the Catamounts exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh to earn a 7-0 shutout over Eastern Kentucky in college baseball action from Bradenton, Florida this afternoon.

Vermont held a slim 1-0 lead through six innings, but in the seventh, Leif Ekelund (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) doubled. Senior Jeff Barry (Essex Junction, Vt.) earned a trip to first base after being hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Bobby Tewksbary (Hudson, N.H.) singled to load the bases and Jeff Carey (Colchester, Vt.) knocked a double to start the rally. Junior Barry Chamberland (Bellows Falls, Vt.) followed with another double and eventually scored to account for Vermont’s six-run inning.

Bissonnette picked up the victory on the mound with six solid innings of work. Brett Dobens (Hudson, N.H.) relieved Bissonnette in the seventh to close out the contest.

Ekelund finished the afternoon with two hits as UVM’s offensive production was spread throughout the lineup.

The Catamounts improve to 4-1 on the year and will close out their Florida swing facing three Big 10 schools. UVM plays Illinois at 10:30am on Friday and has a pair of games on Saturday versus Indiana and Ohio State.
