BURLINGTON, Vt. – University of Vermont pitcher Justin Albert (Hull, Mass.) has signed a contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Albert is the third Catamount to sign with a Major League club this season, joining teammates Justin Milo (Edina, Minn.) and Joe Serafin (Tarrifville, Conn.).
Albert is currently playing with the Yakima Bears in Yakima, Wash., in the Class A Short-Season Northwest League. Albert has made two appearances in relief on the mound for the Bears and owns a 4.50 earned run average in two innings of work.
Albert was an America East All-Conference First Team selection for the Catamounts this past season. He led the UVM pitching staff with a 4.55 ERA and tossed a league-leading six complete games. He went 5-5 on the season and recorded at team-high 65 strikeouts.
Milo, who was a 37th round pick (selection 1125) by the New York Yankees in the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, is playing in Tampa, Fla. for the GCL Yankees in the Rookie Gulf Coast League. He homered in his first at-bat in his first game and finished the game with a 2-for-4 effort at the plate with two runs scored and drove in two RBI.
Serafin, who was named the America East Baseball Scholar-Athlete on June 30, is pitching for the Bristol White Sox of the Rookie Appalachian League in Bristol, Va. Serafin was selected in the 37th round (selection 1123) by the Chicago White Sox in the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
Serafin has pitched in two games for Bristol and picked up his first career victory in a 9-0 win over the Princeton (W.Va.) Rays. He retired 12 of 13 hitters, five via strikeout, over five innings of work.
