CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The University of Vermont placed a total of 226 student-athletes on the America East Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll. The league office made the announcement Thursday. America East honored over 1,700 student-athletes from around the conference.
Student-athletes with grade point averages of 3.0 or above were recognized with a spot on the academic honor roll. Those student-athletes earning a 3.5 GPA or better were named to the America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Vermont also had 71 student-athletes earn a spot on the Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
The Vermont women’s outdoor track and field team featured the highest number of honorees for the Catamounts, with 44 student-athletes earning recognition.
The men's basketball team, which won the 2009 America East Regular Season title, featured six student-athletes on the academic honor roll, while the women's basketball team, which won the 2009 America East Championship, boasted 10 honorees.
UVM student-athletes boasted a 3.2 GPA for the spring semester of 2009, marking the highest GPA in the department's history and the 14th straight semester with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.
Binghamton had the most student-athletes named to the Academic Honor Roll with 273 recipients. The Catamounts were second and followed by New Hampshire (204), Boston University (194), Albany and Stony Brook (182), UMBC (168), Maine (162) and Hartford (139).
America East is proud to have one of most comprehensive academic awards programs in the country. In addition to the honor roll, an All-Academic team comprised of student-athletes that excel both academically and athletically is chosen in each of the conference’s 21 sports by a committee consisting of faculty athletic representatives, academic advisors and sports information directors.
Additionally, a scholar-athlete, someone who distinguishes themselves as the top student-athlete in their sport, is awarded. From that group, one male and one female is selected the America East Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
The America East Academic Cup, which honors the America East institution with the highest average cumulative GPA among its student-athletes and has been won by Vermont four straight years, will be awarded Wednesday, June 24, while the winter/spring scholar-athletes will be named on Tuesday, June 30.
