BURLINGTON, Vt. – University of Vermont sophomore Matt Duffy (Milton, Mass.) picked up three honors last week, including earning an honorable mention spot on the 2009 All Ping!Baseball Team. Duffy was also named to the ABCA Northeast Region Second Team and the ECAC Division I All-Star Second Team.
Duffy, a shortstop, was named the 2009 America East Player of the Year and to the all-conference first team. He was UVM's first America East batting champion since 2002 with a league-leading .388 average while also ranking first in the conference in runs batted in (57), runs scored (57), slugging percentage (.713) and on base percentage (.495).
Duffy tied the UVM single-season record with 13 homers while setting new school marks for RBI and runs scored. He was also a finalist for the 2009 Brooks Wallace National Shortstop of the Year Award.
Duffy helped lead Vermont (23-33, 14-10 America East) to a tie for third place in the America East regular season standings and the team's fourth trip to the conference tournament in the last five years.
