BURLINGTON, Vt. – University of Vermont sophomore Justin Milo (Edina, Minn.) and senior Joe Serafin (Tariffville, Conn.) were selected in the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, which concluded on Thursday. Milo was taken in the 37th round (selection 1125) by the New York Yankees, while Serafin was also selected in the 37th round (selection 1123) by the Chicago White Sox.
Milo, an outfielder and designated hitter for the Catamounts, batted .337 with 12 home runs and 79 RBIs in 83 career games. He also posted 23 doubles and 10 triples in his career. This past season Milo hit .350 with six home runs and 39 RBIs in 33 games. He was named to the America East All-Conference Second Team for a second straight year.
Milo is also a member of the Vermont men’s hockey team that went 22-12-5 (15-8-4 HEA) this past season and reached the 2009 Frozen Four. He ranked fourth on the team in scoring with 12 goals and 14 assists for 26 points in 39 games.
Serafin, a left-handed pitcher, was 21-17 with a 4.00 earned run average in 60 career appearances for the Catamounts. He struck out 262 batters in 317 career innings. He ranks first all-time in strikeouts and innings pitched at UVM. His 21 victories are tied for first in program history.
Serafin was the America East Pitcher of the Year in 2008 after posting a 6-5 record with a 2.51 earned run average. Opponents hit just .221 against Serafin in 2008 and he struck out 58 batters in 79 innings.
The Vermont baseball team went 23-33 (13-9 AE) in 2009. The Catamounts have had 18 players in program history selected in the MLB Draft since its inception in 1965.
