BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Kyle
Massie (Rutland, Vt.) had four hits and Justin
Milo (Edina, Minn.) drove in five runs as Vermont rolled past
Massachusetts, 17-4, in college baseball Wednesday at Centennial Field. The
contest was the last regular season non-conference game for the Catamounts
(20-17) who rapped out a season-high 19 hits and scored a season-high 17
runs for the fourth time this year.
Every Vermont starter had at least one hit and scored a run as UVM also took advantage of wildness by UMass pitching by drawing 13 walks. The Atlantic-10 Minutemen (14-20) scored all four of their runs in just one inning, the third, and they were limited to nine hits and five walks by five UVM hurlers.
Milo had a three-run double and Todd Allen (Oriskany, N.Y.) had a two-run single in Vermont's seven-run second inning. Massie tripled and scored in the third to make it 8-4 and Miguel Magrass (West Roxbury, Mass.) doubled in a run in the fifth. The Cats broke it wide open with six runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth.
Massie let the UVM hit parade by going 4-for-6 and his seventh triple ties Milo and two others for the program's single season record. Milo also walked and stole a base, Magrass went 3-for-4 while Allen went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Leadoff hitter Mark Micowski (Haddam, Conn.) made seven plate appearances in the eight innings and had a hit, two walks, a stolen base and a RBI. Freshmen Jason Leclerc (Chicopee, Mass.) and Eric Fredette (Glastonbury, Conn.) each came off the bench to go 2-for-2. Leclerc had a pair of doubles and two RBI while Fredette also drove in a run.
For the Minutemen, Brian Baudinet went 3-for-5 with two doubles, Ryan Franczek went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Ben Kessel went 2-for-4 with a triple.
Eric Thompson (Norwich, Conn.) picked up the victory with two innings of scoreless middle relief to improve to 4-1. UMass starter Nick Serino (2-3) went just an inning and a third and took the loss.
The Catamounts continue their nine-game homestand returning to conference play hosting second place Binghamton in a key four-game America East series this weekend. Vermont and the Bearcats meet Friday at 3:00pm, play a doubleheader Saturday starting at noon and wrap up the series with a single-game Sunday at 1:00pm. Admission is free for all regular season UVM baseball games at Centennial Field.
