BURLINGTON, Vt. -- A 12th inning RBI-single by Kyle Massie
(Rutland, Vt.) allowed Vermont to escape with a 12-11 win over Quinnipiac
in non-conference college baseball Wednesday afternoon at Centennial Field.
It was the second straight day the Catamounts (17-15) played a 12-inning
contest and Wednesday, they bounced back after seeing the Bobcats (8-25)
overcome an early six-run deficit and a 11-7 hole in the ninth.
Todd Allen (Oriskany, N.Y) started the game-winning rally for UVM with a leadoff triple to the right field corner in the 12th. After a pair of intentional walks and facing a five-man infield, Massie rapped a 3-1 pitch into left field to end the marathon that took 3:54 to complete. Quinnipiac forced the extra frames with its four-run ninth capped by Blake Barone's three-run double that tied the game at 11-11.
The Catamounts took advantage of early wildness to jumped out to 6-0 lead after three, and they led 7-2 after six before the Bobcats plated four in the top of the seventh. UVM answered with three in its half of the seventh with the big hit a two-out, two-run single by Justin Milo (Edina, Minn.). Both teams added a run in the eighth to set up the ninth inning heroics by Quinnipiac.
The sixth Vermont pitcher, Ethan Paquette (West Burke, Vt.) made his mound debut and went the final two innings allowing just two hits and a walk to pick up his first career victory. QU reliever Eric Bretscher (1-2) was the tough luck loser. He entered the game in the seventh gave a gutsy performance throwing 102 pitches over four and two-thirds innings. He gave up two earned runs, six hits and walked seven but five of the walks were intentional.
Vermont was out-hit by the Bobcats, 21-15, but the Catamounts took advantage of 14 walks and three errors. Massie, who started the game in right field and also played shortstop and third base, went 3-for-4 at the plate with a walk and drove in two runs. Milo, Paquette, Matt Duffy (Milton, Vt.), Miguel Magrass (West Roxbury, Mass.) and Corey Moylan (Glenview, Ill.) had two hits apiece. Milo, Moylan and Paquette also each drove in two runs. Other than Allen's triple, UVM had just two other extra base hits, a triple by Magrass in the eighth and a double by Milo in the 11th.
Quinnipiac was paced by John Delaney who went 6-for-7 with a home run, three runs scored and two RBI. Michael Marmo went 4-for-7 with a home run while Michael Amanti and Barone each had three hits.
Vermont returns to America East play with a four-game series at Albany this weekend at Varsity Field. The Catamounts and Great Danes meet Friday at 3:00pm, play a doubleheader Saturday starting at noon and a final game Sunday at 1:00pm.
