HAMDEN, Conn. -- Matt
Duffy (Milton, Mass.) hit two home runs and Miguel
Magrass (West Roxbury, Mass.) added another as Vermont outslugged
Quinnipiac, 10-7, in a non-league baseball game Wednesday afternoon at
Bobcat Field. The win is the sixth straight and 10th in the last 11 games
for the Catamounts (15-11), who return to America East play this
weekend.
The two teams combined for 29 hits and 10 walks off nine different pitchers and both teams hit three home runs. Tied at 1-1 after two innings, UVM scored eight times over the next three frames to take control and then held off the Bobcats in the late innings.
Magrass hit a two-run shot with one out in the third and Duffy followed with a solo homer to left center. In a three-run fourth, Magrass doubled off the base of the centerfield fence to drive in a run and then rode home on Duffy's second homer of the day and his third of the season.
Quinnipiac (8-20) bounced back in its half of the fourth with back-to-back homers of its own as Michael Marmo hit a two-run shot and the next batter, Anes Koummal, also went deep. Jason Leclerc (Chicopee, Mass.) had a double in the top of the fifth and came home on a single by Brad Currier (Essex Junction, Vt.) to make it 9-4. The Bobcats rallied behind a two-run homer by Brian Momack in the seventh and scored a run with two walks and a single in the eighth to cut UVM's lead to 9-7.
Vermont added an insurance run in its half of the ninth before Joe Serafin (Tariffville, Conn.) retired the Bobcats in order with two strikeouts to pick up the save.
Duffy (2-for-6) and Magrass (2-for-5) each drove in three runs for the Cats. Currier went 3-for-4 on the afternoon while Mark Micowski (Haddam, Conn.), who doubled and stole a base, and Ethan Paquette (West Burke, Vt.) each went 2-for-5. Leclerc also had a multi-hit day going 2-for-4.
In his first start, freshman Owen Ozanich (South Burlington, Vt.) went the first five innings and picked up his first career victory. He scattered 11 hits, struck out three and only three of the four runs he gave up were earned.
Eric Weber (0-4), the first of five Quinnipiac hurlers, went the first four innings and took the loss.
The Catamounts return home to face Stony Brook this weekend in a four-game America East series. Vermont and the Seawolves meet Friday at 3:00pm, play a doubleheader Saturday starting at noon and wrap up the set with a single game Sunday at 1:00pm. Admission is free to all UVM regular season home games at historic Centennial Field.
