BURLINGTON, Vt. -- A run-scoring double by Miguel
Magrass (West Roxbury, Mass.) in the bottom of the 10th inning gave
Vermont an 8-7 victory over Dartmouth in a non-conference college baseball
game Tuesday afternoon at Centennial Field. In its home opener, UVM rallied
to win from a 7-3 deficit heading into the last of the ninth.
Kyle Henry (Brattleboro, Vt.) laced a three-run double in the four-run ninth to tie the contest, the Catamounts first to go to extra innings this season. The win was the fifth straight and its ninth in the last 10 games for UVM (14-11) while the Ivy League leading Big Green fall to 17-11.
Matt Duffy (Milton, Mass.) was hit by a pitch to lead off Vermont's ninth inning rally. Magrass walked on four pitches before Ethan Paquette (West Burke, Vt.) singled in Duffy to make it 7-4. Another walk to Jeff Nolet (Concord, Mass.) loaded the bases and Henry's long drive to centerfield sent all three runners home to tie the score. Duffy reached second base on an outfield error to lead off the 10th and scooted home with the game-winner on a long double to center by Magrass.
The fourth UVM pitcher, Tom Kelly (Milton, Mass.), pitched two hitless and scoreless innings to earn his first victory as a Catamount.
Both teams scored a run in the first to open the game. Michael Pagliarulo tripled in Nick Santomauro with two outs for Dartmouth and in the bottom of the frame, Mark Micowski (Haddam, Conn.) led with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Justin Milo (Edina, Minn.).
The Big Green took advantage of two UVM errors and a two-run double by Erik Bell to score three times in the second. Johnathan Santopadre delivered a two-run single in the sixth to make it 6-1.
Vermont began its rally in the seventh for a pair of runs on two walks, an infield error and a two-out, two-run single by Paquette. Dartmouth made it 7-3 in the eighth on a run-scoring double by Santopadre.
The Cats had 10 hits as Henry and Paquette each went 3-for-5 with three runs batted in. Starter Justin Albert (Hull, Mass.) went the first six innings and just two of the six runs he allowed were earned.
Santopadre had two of the Big Green's seven hits. Dartmouth starter Ben Murray was effective through the first six innings allowing only five hits and the run in the first inning. The fourth pitcher, Dan Ternowchek, suffered the loss.
The Catamounts are at Quinnipiac Wednesday at 3:00pm before returning home to face Stony Brook this weekend in a four-game America East series. Vermont hosts the Seawolves Friday at 3:00pm, a doubleheader Saturday starting at noon and a single game Sunday at 1:00pm. Admission is free to all UVM regular season home games at Centennial Field.
