Focus on Gucciardi Fitness & Recreation Center

The University of Vermont's recreation and fitness center was officially opened on September 21, 1999. Richard E. Tarrant announced he was naming it after Richard and Mary Anne Gucciardi, both active supporters of UVM athletics and UVM student-athletes for nearly 30 years.

Tarrant, the father of three former UVM student-athletes and co-founder of IDX Systems Corporation of South Burlington, donated $1.5 million to the university to help in the building of the fitness and recreation center, which is the final piece of a $4.7 million renovation of the Gutterson Fieldhouse.

"I can't thank Richard and Mary Anne Gucciardi enough for all they have done for UVM and for UVM's student body," Tarrant said after unveiling the name.

Mary Anne Gucciardi, longtime president of the Catamount Club, UVM's all-sport booster organization, was caught completely off-guard by the surprise announcement.

"I am so totally surprised and I am so appreciative to Rich," she said. "It has been a joy to work with all of the student-athletes at UVM, and we thank you so much."

All four of the Gucciardi's children graduated from the University of Vermont.

Contributing to a healthy UVM community

The new center, housed in a two-story addition to the western portion of Gutterson Fieldhouse — UVM's home rink, provides UVM students with a first-rate on-campus location to exercise and participate in a healthy lifestyle. It includes two-story lobby with a 28-1/2-foot climbing wall and skylight; the offices for the Recreational Sports department; a 1,400-square foot aerobics studio; and a large, glassed fitness area that faces south over the university's athletic fields and the Green Mountains. The fitness area, nearly 6,000-square feet, includes free weights, weight machines and cardiovascular and aerobic equipment such as stationary bicycles, treadmills, stairclimbers, rowing machines and elliptical fitness cross-training machines.

The recreation and fitness center is an integral part of the university's plan to create a healthy community for its students, faculty and staff.

The renovation of the Gutterson complex included a new roof for the entire structure and a complete overhaul of the Gardner-Collins Cage, UVM's indoor track facility. The indoor track now includes two running tracks and three multi-purpose courts which can be used for a variety of uses, among them physical education classes, intramural and club sports activities, and practice for UVM's varsity athletic teams.
