BURLINGTON, Vt. – Jeff Schulman, Senior Associate Athletic Director at the University of Vermont, will be heading to the 18th Maccabiah Games July 12-23 in Israel. Schulman was selected to serve as the overall team manager of the United States delegation.

As the leader of the U.S. delegation, Schulman is responsible for coordinating all Team U.S.A. activities in Israel. Team U.S.A. will consist of approximately 900 athletes and 300 supporters.

In 1997, Schulman competed in the Maccabiah Games as a member of the U.S. Ice Hockey team. He has also served as a team manager at the past two Pan-American Maccabi Games – 2007 in Buenos Aires, Argentina and 2003 in Santiago, Chile.

Often referred as the "Jewish Olympics", the Maccabiah Games are held every four years and include an estimated 8,300 athletes from over 60 countries, making it the third-largest sporting event in the world behind the Olympics and the World Cup.

Competition is held in various cities throughout Israel, with levels including juniors, youth, open and masters. Over 40,000 people are expected to attend the Opening Ceremonies which are slated for July 13 at Israel’s National Stadium outside of Tel Aviv.

A pair of former Catamounts are also scheduled to participate in the 2009 Maccabiah Games. Former field hockey standout Ariel Eber has been selected as a goalie for the U.S. team and Kate Haber, a former shortstop at UVM, has been named to the softball team.

Schulman is in his sixth year as the senior associate athletic director at the University of Vermont. He served as assistant director of athletics from 1993-2002 before being promoted to senior associate.

In his current role, Schulman is responsible for the department's financial operations including budget management and control as well as coordination of all capital projects. He also assists in the department's development efforts and oversees the women's soccer and women's lacrosse programs.

Schulman, a 1989 Vermont graduate, was a four-year letter-winning defenseman on the men's hockey team. He assisted on one of the most famous Vermont hockey goals ever when the Catamounts defeated eventual national champion Harvard in the ECAC Semifinals at the Boston Garden in 1989. Following the season, Schulman was selected by the Boston Bruins in the 1989 NHL supplemental draft.

After graduation, Schulman was selected for the prestigious Asa A. Bushnell Internship with the ECAC office in Centreville, Mass. During his one-year internship with the ECAC he assisted in event management and publicity for the conference. Following the ECAC, Schulman was an assistant athletic director at Bates College prior to being hired at Vermont.

Schulman is currently serving a four-year term on the NCAA Women's Ice Hockey Committee and in September, 2008, was named chair of that committee. Previously, Schulman served a five-year term on the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Committee and has chaired and participated on several America East and ECAC committees in a variety of sports.

In September of 2000, Schulman was named Josten's/ECAC Administrator of the Year. He has also been honored by the New England Women's Soccer Association and the Northeast Gymnastics Coaches Association as their administrator of the year.

In 2000-2001, Schulman spent a one-year professional development leave in Israel studying at a graduate program and completing a master's thesis in education. Schulman received his M. Ed. from UVM in 2002.
