Today/USA Hockey Poll
BURLINGTON, Vt. – The University of Vermont men’s hockey team was ranked third in the final USA Today/USA Hockey Poll released today after reaching the 2009 Frozen Four at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. It’s the highest final ranking in program history for the Catamounts. Vermont was ranked No. 4 at the completion of the 1995-96 season when the Catamounts last reached the Frozen Four.
Vermont went 22-12-5 (15-8-4 HEA) in 2008-09 to post a fifth straight winning season for the first time since moving to the Division I level in 1974-75. The 22 wins were the most since 1996-97, the last time UVM reached the NCAA Tournament prior to this season.
Vermont completed the year with a 5-4 loss to eventual national champion Boston University in the national semifinals. Despite the loss to the Terriers in the Frozen Four, the Catamounts were the only team to beat BU twice this season. Vermont went a combined 3-2-1 against BU and Miami, the two teams that played in the 2009 NCAA title game.
The Catamounts were ranked in the top-10 of the USA Today/USA Hockey Poll for the final 15 weeks of the season.
