CATAMOUNTS TEAM UP WITH COTS
The University of Vermont women's basketball has teamed up with the
Committee on Temporary Shelter (COTS), in Burlington, for three games in
November and December. Catamount fans attending the select games are
encouraged to bring unwrapped toys to donate to COTS. Fans who bring toys
to donate are automatically entered into a drawing for a gift certificate
to Junior's at each game.
COTS has listed some of their greatest needs during the holiday season as: educational toys (for older children, ages 10+), waterproof hats, mittens and gloves for adults and children, ponchos, alarm clocks, new toothbrushes, umbrellas and most importantly gift cards - for groceries, gas, pharmacy or other stores (so parents can buy presents for their children). If fans prefer to keep their focus strictly on children they are encouraged to bring educational toys, children's art supplies, waterproof hats, mittens & gloves, and toothbrushes. The team will deliver the collected items to COTS the week of December 15.
COTS provides emergency shelter, services, and housing for people who are without homes or who are marginally housed. COTS advocates for long-term solutions to end homelessness.
Please bring items for the COTS program to the following games:
Wed., Nov. 26 vs. Providence, 4 p.m.
Sat., Dec. 6 vs. Holy Cross, 1 p.m.
Sun., Dec. 14 vs. Kent State, 4 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT - St. John’s 70, Vermont 58 | Box
Score
UVM dropped a 70-58 decision at St. John’s in its last outing on Sunday.
Vermont trimmed a 15-point St. John’s advantage to four late in the
second half, but could not overtake the Red Storm. Courtnay Pilypaitis led
Vermont with 19 points and 11 rebounds for the 12th double-double of her
career.
KOTSOPOULOS NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Junior guard May Kotsopoulos, the reigning America East Defensive Player of
the Year, has been on the offensive lately and was named the America East
Player of the Week for the first time in her career on Monday. Kotsopoulos
avearged 18.7 points, 3.6 assists and 3.0 steals, while shooting 46.3
percent from the field last week for Vermont. She scored 25 points in
UVM’s overtime win against Providence. It was one shy of her career-high
and 24 of the points came in the second half.
WORKING OVERTIME
For the first time in program history Vermont played in back-to-back
overtime games. UVM played its first-ever triple-overtime game and pulled
out an 82-77 win over Dartmouth in the consolation game of the TD Banknorth
Classic. Vermont followed that up with a 73-67 overtime win against
Providence. UVM is 2-0 this season in overtime games and 15-13 all-time.
The school record for most overtime games in a season is three in
2003-04.
SHEFTIC SHINES
Junior Alissa Sheftic scored a career-high 10 points against Quinnipiac and
combined that with 10 rebounds to post her first career double-double as a
Catamount. She also scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds in UVM’s
overtime victory against Providence. Sheftic ranks 11th in the league in
rebounding (5.3 rpg) and sixth in the conference in blocks (1.17 pg). She
entered her junior year with 16 career blocks and already has six through
the first six games of the season.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR?
Junior May Kotsopoulos is the reigning America East Defensive Player of the
Year, in back-to-back games she scored 24 points versus Dartmouth and 25
agaisnt Providence. She enters the Holy Cross game leading the team in
scoring at 16 points per game.
ABOUT HOLY CROSS | Website
The Crusaders stand at 1-6 on the year. In the most recent outing on
Wednesday, Holy Cross fell to No. 1 Connecticut 96-37. The Crusaders
earned their first win of the year in a thrilling triple-overtime victory
against Missouri in a tournament at Northwestern. Brianna McFadden, the
reigning Patriot League Player of the Year, netted 31 points against
Missouri and leads the team in scoring (19.7 ppg). She also makes a habit
of going to the line and has made 35 of the Crusaders’ 70 free throws
this season. McFadden is 35-for-45 (77.8%) from the stripe this season.
Teammate Bethany O’Dell ranks second on the team in scoring, chipping in
13.3 points per game. She also ranks second in rebounding, collecting 4.2
caroms per contest. The duo are the only two players to start six straight
games this season.
This the third consecutive meeting between the two teams. The all-time series is knotted up at 6-6. UVM has won three of the last four meetings, including two straight. Last season Vermont defeated Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., 54-44, in the second game of the season. The Catamounts used an 11-0 second half run to open up a tight game and Courtnay Pilypaitis came off the bench to score a game-high 18 points to lead UVM.
LAST TIME vs. HOLY CROSS - Vermont 54, Holy Cross 44
The Vermont Catamounts used an 11-0 second half run to open up a tight game
and Courtnay Pilypaitis came off the bench to score a game-high 18 points
to lead UVM to a 54-44 victory over Holy Cross at the Hart Center. Amy
Rosenkrantz added 11 points and six rebounds and Sofia Iwobi contributed
eight points, four rebounds and three assists.
VERMONT vs. PATRIOT LEAGUE
Vermont is 23-17 versus Patriot League teams. Last season UVM went 3-0
versus the conference with wins over Holy Cross, Colgate and Lafayette.
THREE’S UP
Vermont made a season-high 13 three-pointers in its win over Dartmouth.
That is one shy of the single-game school record.
GRAND SIGHTS
Courtnay Pilypaitis scored a team-high 26 points, including her 1,000th
career point in Vermont’s season opening win over UMass. She is the 17th
player at UVM to reach the 1,000-career point milestone and the seventh
player to reach the mark prior to her senior year. She scored her 1,000th
career point in her 65th career game, the fourth fastest in school
history.
Pilypaitis could be one of three Catamounts to reach 1,000 points this season as teammates May Kotsopoulos and Amy Rosenkrantz are also within reach of the mark. Rosenkrantz is 145 points away from 1,000, while Kotsopoulos is 175 points shy of the milestone.
BLOCK PARTY
Alissa Sheftic and Andrea Cihal rank 6-7 among America East block leaders.
The duo has combined for 12 through six games. Sheftic entered the season
with 16 career blocks and has six already this season. Cihal has totaled
78 career rejections entering the Holy Cross game, which is good for eighth
all-time.
BOARD GAMES
One of the things head coach Sharon Dawley wanted to improve upon this
season was rebounding. The Catamounts have responded, currently leading the
league in rebounding margin at +3. Courtnay Pilypaitis leads the
conference on the boards, collecting 9.3 caroms per game. UVM has out
rebounded its opponent in five of six games.
CENTURY MARK AHEAD
Andrea Cihal has played in 95 career games and teammate Amy Rosenkrantz has
seen action in 90 games entering the Holy Cross contest. The two are on
pace to become the 25th and 26th players to reach the century mark in games
played and could come close to becoming the all-time leaders at Vermont.
Former standouts Libby Smith ‘02 and Dawn Cressman ‘03 are UVM’s
all-time leaders in games played at 122 games. Smith not only saw action
122 games, she started all 122 contests in her career.
A CASE OF PILYPAITIS
Junior Courtnay Pilypaitis is the reigning America East Player of the Year.
She is just the second player in league history to earn America East
Rookie of the Year honors as a freshman and garner America East Player of
the Year honors as a sophomore (the other player is current Maine head
coach Cindy Blodgett). Pilypaitis was a unanimous selection for the
America East All-Conference Preseason Team for the second straight year
prior to the start of this season. She also garnered some national
attention earning a spot on the Women's Basketball Magazine Mid-Major
Preseason All-America Team. Last year Pilypaitis ranked among the league's
top-10 in nine of 10 statistical categories and led Vermont in scoring,
rebounding, assists, free throw percentage, free throws made and
three-point field goals made. In 2008-09, Pilypaitis leads the league in
rebounding (9.3) and ranks among the top-10 in scoring, assists, free throw
percentage and three-point field goal percentage.
SPECIAL K
Junior May Kotsopoulos is the reigning America East Defensive Player of the
Year. She is the first Catamount to garner the honor and was a unanimous
choice for the league's all-defensive team for the second time last year.
Kotsopoulos also earned a spot on the America East All-Conference Second
Team and All-Academic Team (had the highest GPA of the five players
selected to the squad). She was named the America East Women's Basketball
Scholar-Athlete with a 3.54 GPA as a business administration major. This
season Kotospoulos leads the team in scoring (16.0 ppg), 2nd in AE, and
leads the league in steals (2.67), while ranking among the top-10 in three
other categories.
ASSISTING A WIN
Vermont is 10-1 when it hands out 20 assists or more in a game dating back
to the 2006-07 season. UVM leads America East in assists in 08-09 (15.00
pg).
NON-CONFERENCE NUMBERS
Vermont is 24-9 versus non-conference teams over the past two seasons. UVM
went 10-3 against non-league teams in 2006-07 and 13-3 last season.
TERRIFIC TRIO
UVM is the only team in the league to have three players ranked among the
top-11 in scoring and rebounding. May Kotsopoulos (2nd), Courtnay
Pilypaitis (6th) and Amy Rosenkrantz (11th) are among the scoring leaders
in the conference. Pilyapitis (1), Rosenkrantz (7) and Alissa Sheftic (11)
are among the rebounding leaders in America East. Pilypaitis and
Rosenkrantz are two of four players in the top-11 in both categories.
