Release Date: 06-19-2008

Author: Bruce Bosley

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Former University of Vermont baseball standout Miguel Magrass '08 (West Roxbury, Mass.) is off to an excellent start to his professional career belting five home runs in his first 14 games. Following the conclusion of his collegiate career in May, Magrass signed with the Midwest Sliders of the Independent Frontier League on June 3.

In his first game with the Sliders on June 4, Magrass went 2-for-4 including a home run in his first professional at bat in a 4-3 loss to River City. Through 14 games he is hitting .281 and has 13 RBI to go with his team-high five homers. Based out of Waterford Township, Mich., the Sliders are playing the entire 2008 season on the road due to the ongoing construction of a new ballpark. In 2009, the team will become the Oakland County Cruisers.

Magrass joins former UVM teammate Bryan Rembisz '07, a pitcher for the Traverse City (Mich.) Beach Bums, in the Frontier League. The two will meet in a three-game series between the Sliders and Beach Bums in Traverse City, July 4-6.

Magrass finished his career at Vermont this spring with a solid senior season tying for the team lead with six homers. He started all 51 games at DH, left field and third base hitting .287 and was second on the Catamounts with 39 runs batted in and 28 walks. A career .327 hitter at UVM, he ranked among the program's all-time leaders in several offensive categories including third in RBI (131), seventh in hits (183), fifth in doubles (41), second in triples (11), fourth in home runs (16) and fifth in slugging percentage (.521). The 2004 America East Rookie of the Year and a Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American, Magrass also holds the Vermont single-season RBI record with 52 in his freshman year.
