The Department of Social Work

Do you enjoy working with people? Problem-solving creatively? Listening and reflecting on challenges? Do you think about the social injustices in the world? Do you want to make a difference?

WE welcome students who are interested in understanding and working with people and communities based on people's strengths and guided by principles of human rights and social justice. Our rigorous program prepares students for professional social work practice in a variety of settings. This is a hand-on learning experience which requires extensive self-reflection, processing, and engagement. Moreover, because we are a small group of social work educators, students and faculty work together closely to further understand the complexities of the profession and strategize ways to address and express our commitment to making a difference on local, national and global levels. We enjoy the opportunity to enrich our learning environment by partnering with students while their professional selves emerge.

- Julie Richards, Undergraduate Program Coordinator

"The Bachelor of Social Work Program at UVM has given me the opportunity to both enhance my ability to intellectually theorize issues at hand and sharpen and expand my professional skills. By doing so, I have been exposed to numerous future possibilities that range from seeking a degree as an academic researcher to a highly regarded professional working in the field. Perhaps even more importantly, this program has allowed me to easily form strong and supportive bonds with fellow social work students and faculty. It is because of these relationships that I have developed the ability to be both a leader and a team member, and have been challenged to be cognizant and questioning of my own, as well as surrounding, values and environments. It is this combination of academics and relationships that has prepared me to go out into the field and make a positive difference in the lives of others"
