Tips for a smooth move-in

Move-In day can be a stressful day on campus. You have driven or flown a long distance with a lot of luggage and a bunch of amenities you will soon realize you don't really need. Maybe you've forgotten your favorite item at home. Maybe you can't wait for your parents to leave or are clinging to them as they step out of your res-hall room. No matter what the reality ends up being, there is one thing that is true for all families: Move-in is emotional, stressful, and soooooo exciting! Here are a few tips to keep in mind for this glorious day:

Parking information

Take a look at the Transportation and Parking Website: www.uvm.edu/tps. It will give you a sense of the parking possibilities on campus. Once you arrive to campus please follow the instructions of the folks in bright orange vests; it may seem completely inconvenient for you, but it is based on a well thought plan from years of experience. The goal is to drop your stuff off close to the res-hall and before you unpack and settle in, move your car to a more permanent parking space.

Pre-order as much as possible

Need a small refrigerator for your room? Want to buy your books for class? Still need a personal computer? If you pre-order these items you will spend less time wandering around the bookstore and more time decorating your space and settling in. (Note: If you order your fridge early, it is highly probable that it will be waiting in your room when you arrive).

Come when you are scheduled

I know what you are thinking, "I have to get to the room before my roommate so that I can get the best bed, desk, space in the room." Well, your roommate is thinking the same thing. So instead of fighting the crowds at 6 am or sitting in your car for hours of traffic, come at your appointment time and you will have a much easier time getting in and out of check-in. But don't come too late--life gets a little more difficult if you come after 4:00pm. Your hall-mates may have already figured out how to get to Church Street or are cheering on the Catamounts at a soccer game--you don't want to miss all the fun.
