Welcome to the laboratory!

Our interests involve understanding the neurobiological mechanisms of emotion and emotional learning, with an emphasis on fear and anxiety behaviors. We use a variety of techniques to investigate these mechanisms, which include assessing conditioned and unconditioned fear and anxiety, pharmacological manipulations, neuroanatomical techniques, and intracellular electrophysiological techniques. We are particularly interested in the involvement of the neurotransmitter serotonin in emotional behavior, and the mechanisms of action of drugs that modulate serotonergic systems.

Funding News:

July 2008: Professor Hammack received a Young Investigator Award from NARSAD to investigate the role of 5-HT7 receptors in learned helplessness.

November 2008: We've received a grant (R21) from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) to examine the neurophysiological and neuropharmacological correlates of the anxiolytic effects of voluntary exercise. This grant involves a collaboration with Bill Falls, also in the Department of Psychology

December 2008: We've received news that an internal grant (Research Opportunities Grant Program) that involves a collaboration wtih Victor May in the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology (medical school) and Matthias Brewer in the Department of Chemistry has been awarded. The projects in this grant are designed to investigate how PACAP-related pharmacological agents modulate anxiety-like behavior.
