Frequently Asked Questions

Tenure/Tenure Track Faculty Salary Equity Study

Who coordinated the study?

The study was commissioned by the President in response to and in support of a recommendation from the Commission on the Status of Women. The internal partners in completing the study were the Office of the Vice President for Human Resources, Diversity and Multicultural Affairs and the Office of Institutional Research. The external partner was Dr. Murray Clayton, a Professor with a joint appointment in the Department of Statistics and in the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Clayton was selected after a national search for selection of a consultant to conduct a faculty salary equity study. In addition to his professional expertise, Dr. Clayton has experience doing similar salary analyses at other higher education institutions, including his home institution, University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Clayton has authored over 170 publications in the statistical and scientific literature and teaches courses on statistical consulting and statistics in the sciences.

How was the analysis done?

Dr. Clayton defined the analysis, what data was needed, what variables would be included and how the analysis would be conducted. At the request of Dr. Clayton, the Office of Institutional Research provided data and responded to questions and produced the statistical reports related to the data at Dr. Clayton’s direction on the parameters of the analysis. Dr. Clayton then interpreted those results and has relayed them in his report.

Is the report available?

Yes.  The report will be available at: http://www.uvm.edu/salaryfacultyequity

What are the next steps?

Although no evidence of systemic differences was found, the Provost will continue his review of the outcome of the analysis with the individual deans to assess on an individual basis whether any further review or adjustments in salary are warranted. If you have concern about equity related to your salary, you should address those questions with your Dean following established practices.

Will there be an equity study for staff?

Yes.  The President is currently working with the Office of Institutional Research and Office of the Vice President for Human Resources, Diversity and Multicultural Affairs to determine appropriate parameters for a salary equity study for staff.  The plan is to work on preparing for a staff salary equity study in the summer 2014.

Can I have access to the date that was used for this study?

Any data requests should be directed to the Office of Institutional Research.
