Lourdes de Dios is a Cuban born lecturer who has been teaching at the University of Vermont since 2008. She joined UVM after spending 11 years of her professional career teaching English as a second language and Spanish in the New York City and Vermont Public School Systems.
Lourdes came to the United States with her family in 1966 when she was 12 years old, seven years after the Cuban Revolution. She has participated in lectures about Cuba, most recently she was invited to speak at the Sixteenth Annual Hispanic Forum at The University of Vermont (October 2009).
Most of her life Lourdes lived in New York City where she studied ESL and Spanish at Hunter College in New York City, and received a Master of Science in Education in 2000. Prior to that, she studied painting and textile design and received a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts from Hunter College in 1995 and an Associate Degree in Applied Science from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City in 1987. She owned a textile design company in New York City where she designed and painted silk textiles, and taught and directed apprentices for seven years.
Before teaching at UVM, Lourdes taught Spanish at Saint Michael’s College in Vermont. At the present time she is working on a pedagogical project creating lessons for beginners based on her life experience in Cuba.
