CURRICULUM TEAM PROGRAM PRIORITIES

(Listed by Team, with Programs in Priority Order, FY 1998- FY 2001)

The following program priorities have been established by Extension faculty and program staff with guidance from Extension's citizen advisory groups. These priorities will be used to plan Extension programs and activities for the next four fisc al years.

 

AGRICULTURE

GOAL: To promote a vital agriculture in Vermont through the provision of information and educational programs for diverse audiences.

 

Objectives:

1. Teach leadership and management skills and the use of effective tools for comprehensive decision making.

Program Components:

A. Provide high quality information on agricultural production practices to farmers

B. Improve decision making practices through increased knowledge of goal setting, problem diagnosis, agricultural business principles and management, tax and estate planning, intergenerational transfers, and retirement planning

C. Enhance the understanding of marketing alternatives, government regulations, and product pricing

2. Teach production and marketing practices that promote the wise use of natural resources upon which agriculture depends.

Program Components:

A. Increase producer adoption of sustainable agricultural practices, including the reduced loading of farm nutrients and other contaminants to ground water, maximized utilization and recycling of on-farm and other available resources, e.g., manu re, crop residues, urban wastes, and fertilizers

B. Increase awareness and adoption of good water quality for farms

C. Educate growers on the range of strategies available to avoid the unnecessary use of agricultural chemicals, and their safe and appropriate use

D. Improve soil and water quality while increasing profitability and enhancing quality of life

3. Demonstrate and communicate to the people of Vermont the values of agriculture and its interdependence with communities.

Program Components:

A. Provide user friendly materials on the connection between the agricultural industry and the Vermont economy

B. Develop and provide educational programs on the influence of local, state, and national policies and legislation on farm viability

4. Encourage future generations to value and become engaged in agriculture.

Program Components:

A. Support 4-H, FFA, and other youth development programs with agricultural education and information directed to the young people of Vermont

 

FAMILY AND COMMUNITY RESOURCES AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

GOAL: Increase the capacity of communities, families and individuals to improve their own quality of life.

Parent Education

GOAL: Increase the capacity of communities and families to enhance their own economic development.

 

Objectives:

1. Response to Welfare Reform.

Program Components:

A. Life skills (for employability) Curriculum for Adults Train the Trainer

B. Welfare Simulation intro followed by focus groups in Regions (in-service with diversity team)

C. Parent/Share train-the-trainer mentors (Welfare to Work)

D. Helping Children Cope with Divorce*

E. Active Parenting of Teens & others*

F. Roller Coasters-children experiencing loss train-the-trainer*

2. Financial Management.

NUTRITION, FOOD SAFETY AND HEALTH

GOAL: Vermonters will adopt nutrition and related lifestyle practices that promote health.

 

Objectives:

1. Educate Vermont adults and youth to use the U.S. Dietary Guidelines and the Food Guide Pyramid to choose a healthful diet.

Program Components:

A. EFNEP program

B. Making It Fit nutrition education series

2. Educate Vermonters to adopt dietary practices recommended for specific life cycle stages.

GOAL: Every child and adult will have continuous access to a safe, affordable, adequate and acceptable food supply.

 

Objectives:

1. Increase consumer and producer awareness, understanding and information on food accessibility and affordability.

Program Components:

A. People Grow project

2. Increase consumer and producer awareness, understanding and information regarding food safety and food borne risks and illnesses.

Program Components:

A. Manager/handler/producer food safety education

NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT

GOAL: Sustain and enhance the quality of Vermont=s natural resources through citizens understanding the effects for local decisions on both local and global ecological and economic systems.

 

Objectives:

1. Sustainable Natural Resources Education and Management.
