“Four Founders of Latin American Feminist Photography,” David William Foster, Regents Professor, Spanish & Portuguese, Arizona State University

11:45 am

“Pizza birra faso: The Politics of Architecture in Neoliberal Buenos Aires,” Amanda Holmes, Associate Professor, Hispanic Studies,

“Space, Trauma, and Memory in the Digital Age: Spaces of Memory in Santiago, Chile,” Andreea Marinescu, Assistant Professor, Spanish Department, Colorado College

Keynote Speaker:

David William Foster. Regents Professor, Portuguese & Spanish (Arizona State University)

Foster’s research focuses on the cultural production of Latin American cities, with emphasis on Buenos Aires, São Paulo, and Mexico City and with a particular interest in women's history, queer theory,
sexual identities, and Jewish cultural identity. The genres of cultural production with which he basically concerns himself are narrative, film, theater, and photography. Recent books deal with Argentine
urban photography and the city of São Paulo. Books on Latin American documenary filmmaking and the city of Phoenix were published in 2014, and a monograph on Gender and photography in Latin America will
appear in 2014.

Guest Speakers:

J. Miguel Kanai. Assistant Professor. Department of Geography (University of Miami)

Professor Kanai’s research explores how intertwined processes of urbanization and globalization shape contemporary social life. With a focus on the territorial policies and politics of redevelopment in
globalized cities, his work engages with postcolonial urban theory; the spatiality of inequality; regional, city and neighborhood planning; and the place of the middle classes in the contemporary city.
Kanai’s research and teaching have a global perspective and a regional specialization in the Americas.

Ernesto Capello. Associate Professor of History and Latin American Studies (Macalester College)

Capello’s scholarship emphasizes transnational imaginaries and encounters, urban history, visual culture, and the history of cartography. These currents intersect in his first book, City at the Center of
the World: Space, History, and Modernity in Quito.

Amanda Holmes. Associate Professor. Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures - Hispanic Studies (McGill University)

Holmes’ research interests are centered around the intersections between spatial theory and Hispanic literature and film. Recent book projects interpret the representation of urban space in contemporary
Latin American culture. Author of City Fictions: Language, Body and Latin American Urban Space.

Andreea Marinescu. Assistant Professor. Spanish Department (Colorado College).

Marinescu’s research centers on Latin American literature and film with a focus on post-dictatorship Chile and the Southern Cone. She has published articles on exiled artists Raúl Ruiz and Roberto
Bolaño, and has recently conducted research on urban space and memory in the city of Santiago, Chile. She is particularly interested in examining how physical spaces of memory, such as former military
detention centers, use both material and digital tools to move beyond the trauma of the dictatorship and reformulate emancipatory political ideals.

Living and Laughing by the Chopsticks-Fork Principle

Time: 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Location: Lafayette 207
Description: Cathy Bao Bean, author of The Chopsticks-Fork Principle, A Memoir and Manual and co-author of The Chopsticks-Fork Principle x 2, A Bilingual Reader (which will also be published in China), is a daughter, mother, wife, friend, sister, aerobics instructor, business manager, and Chair of the Society for Values in Higher Education as well as its Summer Workshop for Teachers in China project.

With delight and good humor she encourages people to realize and understand (and laugh about!) how we are all at least bi-cultural (by ethnicity, gender, generation, status, wealth, etc.) in a way that shatters stereotypes but explains the generalizations. And she does this by making the “familiar” and “foreign” into each other and by telling personal stories about ordinary events that raise extraordinary cultural questions – like:

• Can the Tooth Fairy survive the Melting Pot or the Monkey King live on Kentucky Fried Chicken?
• Can you fail or succeed simultaneously in two cultures?
• What difference does it make to your brain whether English or Chinese/Japanese/Korean was your first
language?
• What happens when you have a sub-conscious but your (grand)mother doesn’t?
• How do you say ‘I love you’ in America? Everywhere else?
• How do your several Selves morph from Asian Traditionalist into Western Modernist and back again?
• How do people reach a decision – by consensus? voting? power/status?

Sponsored by the Department of Asian Languages and Literatures, the Asian Studies Program, the Center
for Cultural Pluralism, and the Chinese House Program at the Living and Learning Center
