Section 2
GreenHouse Residential Learning Community

GreenHouse is a Residential Learning Community (RLC) with an array of opportunities for motivated students to enhance their interests in environmental issues and practices. (For more details about GreenHouse, please visit the GreenHouse Website: http://www.uvm.edu/greenhouse ).

Members of GreenHouse living on campus will reside in Buildings S-1 and S-2 of the South Complex of the University Heights Residence. GreenHouse has been designed to accommodate several levels of involvement. You should choose from the following:

I. Green Lifestyle (required of ALL GreenHouse residents):

In addition to having the opportunity to participate in a wide range of exciting environmental programs, every member of the GreenHouse Community should be committed to pursuing a "Green Lifestyle". The elements of the Green Lifestyle are based on an evolving Ecological Code of Values collectively developed and adopted by members of the community. All GreenHouse residents are expected to participate in GreenHouse community meetings and celebrations that take place three times each semester. In addition, everyone is expected to be part of the GreenHouse "virtual community," where each person can introduce their backgrounds and environmental interests. Finally, service to the community is an essential part of GreenHouse life. All residents should plan to perform and document three hours of community service each semester.

Refer to the GreenHouse Website for a complete description of this level:
http://www.uvm.edu/~ghrlc/?Page=lifestyle/index.html

II. Ecological Citizenship:

Upon completion of Ecology of Place (NR 85), members of the GreenHouse community are strongly encouraged to seek further depth and breadth in their environmental interests by participating in Ecological Citizenship (NR 185). [Note: Current (2008-2009) GreenHouse members in the Green Lifestyle and Lola Aiken Scholars program are exempt from the Ecology of Place pre-requisite.] This self-paced, one credit course provides members with the opportunity to pursue individual interests, team projects, and community service opportunities with support and mentorship from the GreenHouse staff. At the beginning of each semester, members enrolled in Ecological Citizenship will design and commit to a Learning Proposal. The Learning Proposal will focus the member's specific interest through a series of experiential opportunities which seek to increase depth and breadth of knowledge, and create meaningful community involvement. These goals can be reached by active involvement in one of the GreenHouse Guilds, by a partnership with other GreenHouse members, or by an individual project that enhances a member's specific interests.

Refer to the GreenHouse Website for a complete description of these opportunities:
http://www.uvm.edu/~ghrlc/?Page=courses/ecological_citizenship.html&SM=courses/courses_menu.html

III. Ecology of Place (required of all first-year and first-time residents)

GreenHouse provides first-time residents with an array of opportunities for a meaningful and productive transition to life in our residential learning community. We believe that a rich appreciation of the environmental attributes of UVM, the surrounding landscapes of Vermont, and the ecological principles that shape those landscapes, will provide a strong foundation for a variety of academic pursuits of GreenHouse members. To accomplish this goal, all first time GreenHouse residents are required to enroll in Ecology of Place (NR 85) during the fall semester (graded on a "Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory" basis for one credit). As this is a self-paced course, there is no weekly class meeting time. Instead, students will have the opportunity to select from a "menu" of offerings to fulfill their learning objectives. Over the course of the semester, GreenHouse will provide students with ongoing opportunities for:

- Understanding Place
- Applying Ecological Principles
- Assessing Ecological Integrity
- Cultivating Environmental Leadership and Communication

Refer to the GreenHouse Website for a complete description of this level:
http://www.uvm.edu/~ghrlc/?Page=courses/ecology.html&SM=courses/courses_menu.html

Applying to Special Communities Nested within GreenHouse

The Integrated Study of Earth and Environment Program (ISEE) is a residentially based academic program for up to 20 incoming first-year students in the College of Arts and Sciences. The goal of the ISEE Program is to offer first-year students interested in studying the Earth and the environment an opportunity to do so outside of the traditional venue of large introductory classes. This program links four classes in Geology, Geography, and History with residentially-based activities that will foster the development of interactions among students and faculty who share a common academic interest. Please refer to the ISEE Website for additional information about this program:
http://www.uvm.edu/artsandsciences/tap/?Page=fullyearprog/isee.html&SM=fullyearprog/tapfysub.html

If you would like to apply to join ISEE, please indicate below. ISEE students should also enroll in Ecology of Place.
