For several years, the UVM
Recycling and Solid
Waste office has been working on improvements to the aesthetics of
trash collection areas on campus. Below are examples of
improvements that have been completed in the past 5 years as special
project funds are available. These improvements have been completed in
conjunction with construction and renovation projects already happening
on site.
PROJECT:
Replaced an
older style trash compactor which sat out in the middle of the parking
lot. New trash compactor is larger, more efficient unit. This will
reduce the amount of truck traffic to the area, by reducing trash
pickup to once per week rather than six days per week. As
part of the Fletcher Allen Renaissance Project, the area was screened
with an attractive lattice fence. Special thanks to Luce Hillman,
Physical Plant Project Engineer; Lester and Joe, Electrical Shop; MBM
(the Fletcher Allen contractors); and Barney McRae, Vermont Compactor
Service...for making this project a success.

PROJECT:
We improved
the existing, dilapidated wooden fence enclosure at Mann Hall,
replacing it with a more sturdy enclosure made with steel posts, and
attractive lattice. Special thanks to Luce
Hillman and Scott O'Brien for working on the details and with the
contractors to make this project happen.

PROJECT:
The
recycling carts sat on grass in front of building out in plain
view. We relocated the carts to back side of building,
creating
an asphalt walkway and screening with sturdy fencing to control blowing
litter. (City of Burlington did not allow us to put up lattice work on
this location). Special thanks to Luce
Hillman and Scott O'Brien for working on details and with contractors
to get this job done.
