This succession of events can lead to loss of species diversity in the watershed, increased economic costs to residents, and compromise of public resources which many of us cherish. The picture on the right illustrates the type and severity of sediment plume which can extend out into Lake Champlain during a storm event. Sediment-bound pollutants also travel into the lake in such conditions, such as phosphorus and nitrogen derivatives as well as harmful bacteria.
