IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING THE RADIATION SAFETY OFFICE

From the Office of the President

Radiation Safety Office Announcement

05-05-2012.1     By Daniel Joseph Harvey

President Bramley and Provost Knodell have determined that the UVM Radiation Safety Office (RSO), which has historically reported to the Vice President for Research, will transition into the Division of Finance and Enterprise Services (DFES), led by Vice President Richard Cate, as of July 1, 2012. Since all other university health and safety operations report through DFES, this change will provide an opportunity for coordination of radiation safety activities with laboratory safety work generally. This decision makes sense from both an operational and compliance viewpoint. More specifically, RSO will report to the Director of Risk Management & Safety, Mary Dewey. This transition should result in operating efficiencies and will integrate all health and safety programs under one department. The federally mandated Radiation Safety Committee will continue to fall under the purview of a research committee, with day-to-day oversight and operational responsibilities falling under the Department of Risk Management & Safety. The Vice President for Research's Office will also continue to work with the Campus Lab and Workplace Safety Committee. Domenico Grasso, the Vice President for Research and all members of that office have considered it a pleasure to work with RSO Director Keddy Bharathan, along with RSO staff members Tom Kellogg, Ron Kimball, and Donna Durick.

The Radiation Safety Office (RSO) at the University of Vermont (UVM) oversees the use of ionizing radiation sources on campus and ensures compliance with state and federal regulations, to protect UVM employees, students, the public, and the environment. The RSO also provides safety related services for UVM. There are more than 350 faculty, staff, and students using radioactive materials and  ionizing radiation producing devices for research and educational purposes in more than 100 labs in 14 buildings.

The RSO is open Monday thru Friday, 8:00 am - 12:00pm, and 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm and is located in room 004
Rowell Building.   Click Here to see where the Rowell building is located on the main campus.
