Work Experience

Engineering Specialist, University of Vermont, Dept. of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering (CSEE) (7/82 to date). Engineering/computing consultant to faculty and staff, technical staff supervisor, all-around troubleshooter. Activities include writing and revising undergraduate lab experiments, purchase and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation and components, preparation of grant applications, advising and supervising graduate and undergraduate students doing projects, installing and maintaining instrumentation systems, interfacing computers and instrumentation, maintaining technical library, providing computing, network, internet, and world-wide web support and training. Experience with MS/PC-DOS and Windows, Unix/Linux microcomputers and workstations, Microsoft and Corel office applications, internet and electronic mail applications, personal information managers.

Lecturer in Electrical Engineering, (secondary appointment, 9/94 to date). Full responsibility for senior level undergraduate laboratory course covering advanced circuits, analog and digital communications systems, energy conversion, electromagnetics, control systems, and design projects.

President, University of Vermont Staff Council (FY 1994, part-time). Served four years as an elected, volunteer representative. Elected by Council in 1994 to lead the 18 member body, which represents approximately 2000 non-faculty UVM employees. Collaborated with staff, faculty, students, and administration on institutional issues such as strategic planning, compensation, workplace health and safety, job and gender equity, diversity, and others. Reorganized the Council's standing committee structure to better serve the needs of the staff. Represented the staff at formal University functions. Actively pursued campus diversity issues, compensation plan review, strategic planning, employee and management training, participative management implementation, and more. Prepared monthly articles for UVM's staff newsletter and responded to media representatives on University issues. Participated on UVM Board of Trustees committees and Faculty Senate meetings. Met routinely with UVM President Salmon and other top administrators, as well as the presiding officers of the Faculty Senate and Student Government Association to promote collaborative, participative University governance.

Clinical/Technical Specialist, Patient Care Systems, Inc., (part-time mid-1982 to 12/88). Provided clinical and technical support for specialized therapeutic equipment to patients at the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont and to outpatients at their homes. Approximately half-time.

Research Project Engineer, University of Vermont Instrumentation & Model Facility, (9/78 to 7/82). Full project responsibility spanning conceptualization, cost estimating, system design, parts procurement, construction, installation, documentation, and support of instrumentation systems for research and education. Projects encompassed analog, digital and hybrid systems for control, signal processing, data acquisition, and more. Received U.S. Patent #4,475,401 for instrumentation developed for Dept. of Orthopedic Surgery. Acknowledged in several publications, including one that won the Volvo Award in Biomechanics (1981).

Selected Activities

Co-Founder, University of Vermont Environmental Council. (1995-1996) Worked with the Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the UVM Vice President for Administration to create a broadly representative working group to recommend policies and processes appropriate to an institution where environmental responsibility is a core value.

Charter Member, UVM Information Technology Executive Committee (6/95 to date). Six individuals charged with developing institutional policies on application and purchase of information technology, funding IT projects.

Grant Reviewer, Governor's Distance Learning Project (1995). Helped award grants to K-12 institutions throughout Vermont for distance learning initiatives.

Staff Representative, University of Vermont Patent Committee (9/87 to date). Assist in defining and implementing technology transfer policy at UVM, reviewing inventions brought before the Committee by University researchers, and helping to decide UVM's role in pursuing individual patents.

Member, UVM Energy Management Council. (1991-1996) Appointed by UVM President Davis to help guide University energy policy with the goal (successfully achieved) of reducing energy consumption by 20%.

Staff Council Representative (FY 1991 thru FY 1994). Elected to represent the interests of UVM staff in the highest pay ranges in the institution. Chaired standing committee on Employee Environment, and served on Financial Affairs, Internal Affairs, and other committees until elected President in 1993.

Staff Representative, UVM Board of Trustees Buildings and Grounds Committee (FY 1991 thru FY 1994). Participated as a full voting member during several major development and redevelopment projects, including Stafford Hall, a medical research facility, and the Old Mill renovation project.

President (1992) and past Program Chair, Champlain Valley PC Users Group.

Private Consulting. Electronic design, computer applications and support, local area networking, business development.
